Description
Within the Hall of Justice is a member of the departments administration, Judge Carolyn Bachmann, she allegedly dealt with the trivial details of the paperwork, paperclips, ink, etc, in actual fact she is head of Justice Departments Black Ops.A more recent character to emerge from Justice Departments shadows and a possibly ongoing torn in Dredds side, Judge Bachmann is part of the recent ongoing story involving what initially looks like a the groundwork of an elaborate grab for control of Mega City one. Though if it is Bachmann truly calling the shots or someone else it is not certain.
Being in charge of Black Ops meant she immediately ruffled Dredd the wrong way, given that she is in charge of operations that are effectively illegal in Dredds eyes but without genuine evidence there is no action he can take against her. She also seems to have driven a wedge between Chief Judge Hersheys and Dredds until recently rock solid relationship of trust.
Ambitious, intelligent, ruthlessly uncaring for breaking Justice Department laws, and possibly insane, she is not to be trifled with.
I decided to draw a picture of the most recent Dredd villain in the comic given that she is a Judge, and she looks different enough from Hershey and Anderson with a severe librarian style. She may well be killed off shortly, or may yet hang around, but i thought why not draw her anyway?
The 'cupboard' refers to how Hersey described Bachmanns place in Justice Department, out of sight and out of mind, in the shadows.
I've made her look a bit nicer than she is, but that's public relations airbrushing for you
UPDATE - Bachmann was killed in her attempted coup on Justice Department, which i think was a pity since i think they could have gotten at least one more good story with her as the villain.

Personally, I'd love for a character like this to turn out to be the good guy, where Dredd, with his devotion to the overt keeping of the law, is completely unable to see where the real threat lies. So it falls to a fringe operator to identify the real villain and save the day. Anderson used to be used quite skilfully in that role.

That would have been interesting, and i still think it a pity Bachmann was killed off. I kind of miss Anderson being part of Judge Dredds stories in 2000AD.

Yup. She dead. Didn't see the bullet coming from Smiley's Lawgiver though, thought it would be either Dredd, Maitland, or Hershey.

I thought she might be forced to escape. I feel Dredd could do with some re-occurring foes other than PJ Maybe and the Dark Judges, but other than that i thought it was a great story

Well, according to Wagner, a certain someone 'may' be returning next year from the pit's of hell. I'll say no more, but i'm rather split.
Indeed, Dredd's ethos make him at odd's with Batman, who rarely kill's his enemys, yet beside's PJ and the Dark Jay's, the only returning antagonists in Dredd seem to be Ratfink and (probably) yet another alternative universe Cal and maybe the return of Sinfield. She could have made another good pain in the bum for Dredd at some point(That come's right after the Jack) down the line, but maybe Smiley will turn out to be something more sinnister...Oh, and what an amazing job Critchlow did as artist. There where a few iconsistancy's but over all I thought it was steller. Loved that splash panel of Dredd, Maitland, Hershey, Frank and Point. "Who inna' hell's gonna mess with us?!" Classic!

Maybe. Maybe not. Mr Overdrive i for it though. DIRTY FRANK SMASH! I'm a little concerned about the how Jack Point is going to get out of last week's cliffhanger, and poor Dredd...poor, poor Dredd.

I have to admit i was taken aback by how dangerous Bachmann was beyond just scheming.

It's more than a scheme, that's what Cal did. She bloody arranged civil war! And the fact that only Dredd and 'Smiley' suspected her is amazing, she fooled the whole system. Al Ewing is without a doubt the best Dredd writer after Wagner himself.
