Description
My first try in years at drawing the flagship character of the comic anthology 2000 AD.Judge Dredd is a much more interesting character than he is often given credit for, and is remarkably flexible for writers, being perfectly able to be portrayed as the faceless representative of an oppressive state to being a heroic figure who values every citizens life in Mega-City One above his own. Various writers have been able to make good use of him and give the stories a good dose of wit.
I find my sketchy black and white approach seems to work with the grittier characters like Dredd, or from Warhammer 40'000.

Honestly I just don´t see his world as gritty. It seems more like if Duckburg or Mousetown sniffed a powder of Heavy Metal ! It has drama but also A LOT of stuff from a Gotlib comic ! that´s the main reason i prefered Stallone´s adaptation. i know Alan Grant is against but he seems to overlook one detail : by the end of the movie after Dredd kills Rico , guess what system will be reinstated ? the same oppressive one ! That, to me, was the funniest thing about the whole movie (even if demolition man was the superior version !)
The less said about the last movie the better...

I've found Dredds Universe to be, much like the character, pretty versitile, it can be gritty, it can be comedic, it can be downright crazy, yet Dredd goes right on through it all. I think the ideal Judge Dredd movie needs to blend the elements of both movies and strike a balance.

Absolutely.
In fact here are my thoughts on both movies and the character himself:
The funny thng about Joseph Dredd is that he suffers the reverse problem Deadpool does. People take him waaaaay too seriously, while in fact they shouldn't. The character is satirical first and foremost and people tend to miss that part .
Also , wanna know my opinion about the movies ?
"Judge Dredd" - Excellent first 15 minutes with the whole assault on MegaCity. THAT's Judge Dredd ; a satire of an over-zealous and fascist law-enforcer. Then right after that, it becomes Judge John Spartan rather than Judge Joseph Dredd for better or worse. To its credit though, it is still tons of fun to (re)watch and tries to tell a story. Flawed as it is, it still has some merits.
"Dredd" - Very cool introduction of the main character and Judge Anderson for the first 15 minutes (Déjà-vu ? You tell me !). Then right after that... IT's BORING ! For Fuck sake, how creatively bankrupt can you get ?! This is not a movie , this is a fucking Video Game cutscene that goes on for waaaaaay too long. Karl Urban plays a faithful to the comics Judge Dredd so credit's where it's due BUT he has NOTHING to play off of ! And the villains ? How do you make film thugs BORING ?! I don't know, but they've succeeded !

He does look a bit more youthful and less stoney-faced than he usually does. Fresh out of the academy it is then
