Description
A Pre-New 52 Karen/Kara Starr and Nathaniel Adam have a reminisce about some of their apparently erratic vulnerabilities. I still miss these two characters working together, it didn't happen often enough. It is very much at the whim of the writer when it comes to what can and can't hurt them, and what happens if they are actually injured. In some versions of Captain Atom, a huge explosion/possible death can result if his body is pierced or cut, while other, much more story friendly versions were far less dramatic with him being pretty much incapacitated by the sheer pain of his near indestructible skin being damaged until he could be patched up, with a much more minor explosive potential from the quantum energy/radiation released.
Powergirls incredibly brief vulnerability to 'natural' materials was an oddity, occurring in the mid to late 1990's when writers couldn't think of what to do with her ( like giving her an action led adventure series with a touch of humour ). I don't know if it was the writer or his higher ups that thought that making her vulnerable to stones and sharp sticks was a good idea, but thankfully it didn't last long.
Still it all makes things interesting for the characters, if a bit bizarre.

How does it go again? Sticks and stones might hurt Powergirl but ... meh, don't remember XD
Captain Atom's vulnerability would make sense under special circumstances. Like in the JLU animated serie, when a large opening was cut in his suit and he was bombarded by a huge amount of heat and radiations, possibly destabilizing his own power. But if it's just a small hole poked in his skin then it should go like you said.
Man those two are cute together ^^

Yeah, the animated JLU did simplify Cap's powers a bit, rather than make him a human who was bonded on a molecular level to the indestructible alien 'metal' called Dilustel that gave him a connection to the endless energy of the Quantum field, they made him a human who was energy in a much less durable containment suit.
I really should get around to drawing another one of these two.

Having watched it recently, Β I am again reminded ofΒ the "Thin Man" 1930s series with Nick and Nora Charles. Β Their comic moments are much like your PeeGee and Captain Atom moments. Β Sly humor bantered back and forth between flirting friends.
Check these Nick & Nora quotes. Β 70 years later, they still crack me up:

I do like characters having some banter, it just makes them more like people in my opinion. Those are some nice lines, thanks for that link, i should look that movie up.

Thanks
I felt they sort of behaved like a 'bickering but actually really like each other' couple when i first read the comics, and the writers did develop a natural and close friendship for them, but it was ignored by later writers.
More recently i liked their interactions in the 2010 'Justice League Generation Lost' comic, which referred back to that friendship.

Yep. I have to admit I wasn't a fan of that depiction of Captain Atom,Β but i liked the overall story.

there really wasn't a depiction, so much as Cap shows up for two seconds, then gets split opened by Parasite.
You'd think the metal skin would have protected him

Agreed, they got his powers wrong, took his name too literal, and turned him into a plot device.Β Like i said, not my favourite depiction
