Description
Here's a before-and-after comparison of the detail to my book cover.[link]
I drew the piece with PITT pens and COPIC markers on Strathmore Drawing paper, scanned it, and colorized it using Adobe Photoshop CS2.
A few people have asked me to show what changes from grayscale lineart to final color, and hopefully this shows what the process entails.

Love your work, have been following it for quire some time, and this piece is really beautiful. Will the book be available in Europe as well?
Your Catwoman makes me think of Audrey Hepburn, by the way. Not just this piece, but, you know, the way you draw her in general. There's something around the eyes, I guess.

How do you do the colouring in Photoshop? I really struggle with this, I recently attempted to do it for a competition but I didn't know what steps/process to use, you can see it on my profile and here [link]
Can ya help me? I want to keep the colouring subtle, ie I don't want to change the tones just the colour. I'd really appreciate it heaps

I don't have a lot of time today, but I'll try to help as much as I can...
You say you want to change colour, not tones. In Photoshop terms, that means you want to change Hue/Saturation/Color, not Luminosity.
If you look at any PS Mode (on Layers, on any Tool), the last 4 settings are HUE, SATURATION, COLOR, and LUMINOSITY. That means that if you set the Mode to one of those, you will only be affecting THAT ASPECT of the pixels (or in Layers, you will only be able to SEE that aspect of the pixels affected).
Just so you know, COLOR Mode is the combination of HUE and SATURATION. HUE is what color a color is (Red, Green, Violet, Etc....) and SATURATION is how much color is present. For example: Solid red is highly saturated, a pale mauve is underaturated. COLOR Mode means that you will effect HUE and SATURATION at the same time.
So, basically, if you affect any of these OTHER than LUMINOSITY ('tones'), you might find some success.

If you ever get chance, a step by step of how you go from the greyscale to colour would be great.

impressive, love the details on the traditionnal media...I can't do that on paper, i'm stuck with photoshop haha.
juste a question. are you always coloring with the mousse or are you passed on a graphic tablet? 'cause last time I saw you in album (paris/france) you said to me that your cover was only doing by using the mousse. just wonder if it's always the case.
best regards.

Nice. The photoshop really makes it pop without overwhelming the subtleties of the grey tones.

She looks fantastic both ways, but I love how smooth she looks in the after pic.
What brushes do you use in photoshop?

She bears a strong resemblance to Audrey Hepburn, was that a conscious choice?

The insight into the process is almost as cool as the image itself, but that only serves to illustrate just how amazing this image is. Mr. Hughes I am in continual awe of your work, and you provide a constant inspiration as I seek to improve my own work.
