Description
Year: 2011Client: Vertigo/ DC Comics
Media: Media: Pencil, PITT Pen and COPIC marker on Strathmore Drawing paper, then colored with Adobe Photoshop CS2.
This is the wraparound cover to Bill Willingham's FAIREST, coming soon from Vertigo/DC Comics. It's the new new FABLES spinoff book, and I'm the regular cover artist. I've been a FABLES fan for a while now, and am really excited to be a contributor now!
This one was WORK, I mus say, and not for the reasons you might think... When I do regular covers for a book, it usually takes me 5-7 covers before I figure out how I like to portray the main character.
On THIS cover, I had to commit to how I would portray, what, 13 characters? 'Ugh!' and "Oh, no!'
I'm not going to name all the characters portrayed here, because sharp-eyed FABLES fans seem to be having too much fun trying to guess all of them!

Great cover! I wonder what the girl lying next to the one in bed is stealing?Β This looks a scene where everyone is trying to wake the one in bed up.

A very beautiful image, I like that you have drawn so many beautiful women in different poses. It conveys decadence, interpersonal relationships, and wealth very well. Excellent work on the drapery and clothing. This makes me want to read the comic!!

Wow! That's so awesome! I clicked on this cause it looked so familiar and then realized from where: I picked this book up at my local library some months ago! It's really uplifting to see artists from here actually out there in the world. Your work is amazing

Ahahahah, I love your stuff. I think I remember you did some Darkhorse covers that I really adored back in the day. I as a young teenager always wanted the same art to be in the comic, most of the time that didn't happen. One of these days. It's what I would like to strive for, and as far as cool cover artists go, I remember a Dave Dorman. He as well was one of my favorites.

I can't think of anyone more appropriate to illustrate a book about a murder mystery in the world of Fables, which is sparked by the tyranny of beauty. Indeed these ladiesΒ are the fairest in all the land.
Wonderful!

Β I've seen this image several times in the past, but I've only just noticed that there is a gentleman hidden amidst all these lovely ladies (not to mention the elemental forces in distinctly feminine form); this fact and the contented expression on this fellows face can best be explained with two words 'Adam Hughes'.
Β 'Nuff said.

Sometimes the light is not thought in the source but in the meaning.
Illuminating what you want show clearly, or to give certain intention.
The way someone displays the shadow and light can also be caracteristic of its style : )

HUH?!
What are you smoking?
Your statement is BOTH confusing and wrong.
The scene is lit INCORRECTLY... End of story.

You have dedicated light sources coming from the far left (hallway) and two from the right (lamp and headboard).
The center of this work should be bathed in shadow (not BLACK but shaded), nobody should be "top lit" since there's no dedicated light on the celling and NOTHING should be front lit as there is no light in the front.
Were these all drawn and shadedΒ separate and then arranged (like a collage) later?
If you were to shade them together (on the same page) it would have better flow.

Are you familiar with tonal keys? The scene is lit correctly, but rendered in a higher key. That's why the light areas are so bright, almost white, even though they are only illuminated by a small lamp and far away windows.
To be able to see the faces clearly is more important to the success of the illustration than life-like tonal range, Β specially considering that this is a fantasy scene.
An artist of the level of Adam Hughes doesn't make mistakes, only choices.
"Disliked by you" β "wrong"

You put a lot of thought into that... Too bad you're wrong.
The scene is incorrectly lite, your making excuses for him when he CAN defend himself AND he does make mistakes.
And the whole: "Disliked by you" β "wrong"... by using the not equals sign, you're saying that I am right.
Just FYI.

"Disliked by you (does not equal) wrong"
Let me explain it in terms you can understand:
If you don't like it, it doesn't mean it's wrong. In fact there is no "wrong" in art, only choices.

You have to remember that art is subjective and not everyone is going to appreciate things on the same level or for the same reasons.
There are works of his that I do enjoy... This is not one of them.

You're right on almost all of them, except the male is Ali Baba (featured in first Fairest arc), and girl with coffee pot is Bo Peep (featured in a later arc). Both from the writer's mouth.
