Year: 2011Client: Vertigo/ DC Comics
Media: Media: Pencil, PITT Pen and COPIC marker on Strathmore Drawing paper, then colored with Adobe Photoshop CS2.
This is the wraparound cover to Bill Willingham's FAIREST, coming soon from Vertigo/DC Comics. It's the new new FABLES spinoff book, and I'm the regular cover artist. I've been a FABLES fan for a while now, and am really excited to be a contributor now!
This one was WORK, I mus say, and not for the reasons you might think... When I do regular covers for a book, it usually takes me 5-7 covers before I figure out how I like to portray the main character.
On THIS cover, I had to commit to how I would portray, what, 13 characters? 'Ugh!' and "Oh, no!'
I'm not going to name all the characters portrayed here, because sharp-eyed FABLES fans seem to be having too much fun trying to guess all of them!

I haven't been interested in buying an actual comic book for a good long time. After seeing your art for it, and looking into it a bit more... I'm going to the comic book store to see if I can get or subscribe to this. ^^ thanks for sharing your arts!

I see The Snow Queen, Cinderella, Alder, Beauty, The man is either Sinbad or Mowgli *he's obviously got a darker skin tone than Bigby, Beast or Prince Charming, come on people, nor does he have any of their characteristics*, dont know who the one with the short blonde hair is, dont know who the platinum blonde with the coffee/tea is, Ozma, Rapunzel, Snow, Briar Rose, Rose Red and Thumbelina *It's been stated that she would be appearing in the series in interviews with the writer.*

I was staring at this picture before I read the description and thought, "Wow, these girls look an awful lot like the Fabletown honies!" Then I read the description and it made me so happy! Been a big fan of the series myself.

There are so many things to love from this cover!! I love the way all of their different personalities are portrayed and how you managed to put so many characters here without making it look too crowded.
I will definitely be looking forward to the spinoff!

I can only dream that one day my artwork will be as good as yours. This is brilliant! Im not familiar with fables but can identify a few characters I think from fairy stories (I take it that's what fables is based on. I may have to look it up a bit more) It certainly has sparked my intrest to find out more about it which from one piece of art is very impressive

I love all the subtle gestures of each character. That combined with their individual expressions give such an amazing life-like feel to the whole piece.
And, as always, your colors and rendering are like magic! Can't wait to see the rest of your covers for this series!
