Description
Year: 2011Client: Vertigo/ DC Comics
Media: Media: Pencil, PITT Pen and COPIC marker on Strathmore Drawing paper, then colored with Adobe Photoshop CS2.
This is the wraparound cover to Bill Willingham's FAIREST, coming soon from Vertigo/DC Comics. It's the new new FABLES spinoff book, and I'm the regular cover artist. I've been a FABLES fan for a while now, and am really excited to be a contributor now!
This one was WORK, I mus say, and not for the reasons you might think... When I do regular covers for a book, it usually takes me 5-7 covers before I figure out how I like to portray the main character.
On THIS cover, I had to commit to how I would portray, what, 13 characters? 'Ugh!' and "Oh, no!'
I'm not going to name all the characters portrayed here, because sharp-eyed FABLES fans seem to be having too much fun trying to guess all of them!

Look at all those strikingly similar women. I don't see 13 characters. I see one, with several different hairstyles.

There's no need to be sarcastic when tendering an unsolicited critique of a complete stranger's work; it makes it difficult to treat your opinion with seriousness & respect.
I'll work on more variety, as the assignment permits. Thank you for your input.

I really didn't expect you to read it or to consider it a valid point. Comic book artists tend to be really dude-bro and defensive about repetitively drawing idealized women (which usually lack variety & personality), so I moreso intended it to be a comment to other viewers. Imagine my surprise!
You have a great style. It'd be really amazing to see a variety of body shapes/sizes, facial features, and skin tones on your figures. It would definitely add variety and make the figures look less like a man's fantasy object.

One thing you have to keep in mind is: I, and other professional artists, draw what our clients hire us to draw. The cover is question is for anew comic called FAIREST, a FABLES spinoff, and the subject matter is 'the fairest in the land'. If I drew the characters less like 'a man's fantasy object', I wouldn't have been delivering the work I was assigned to do. All those characters have already been designed, by other artists, so I am not free to give them different body types, sizes, facial features, or skin tones.
That is the nature of commercial art, and the nature of my business.

I understand having to do work for others characters (though I have much to say to the fools who created such bland & similar characters). I didn't realize this was a "DRAW AS I SAY" piece and thought it was your own project, especially based on how personally you took my original comment about their similarity. If you were just drawing as you were told, it's not your fault.
You would think a business would want to expand their markets. Trying to appeal to aging, exclusively male demographic that has already been milked is a dead end business decision. I await the day the comic book industry dies or simply turns into porn, as it is destined to.

Well if we want to be technical...it's one character with various hairstyles...and one man. Heh.

Ohh... I see Lumi in the background. Then there's Beauty and the Beast and Rapunzel. All but the others.. not sure.
I think that is Snow White and Rose Red to Briar's left and right?
And Ozma just looks wonderful! <333
I love this cover and your style. I can really see the Alphonse Mucha influence!

I had no idea how you could make such a perfect painting even better when I saw the unfinished version of this on your website. But by God somehow you made it even better than it already was! I am very impressed as always!
