Year: 2011Client: Vertigo/ DC Comics
Media: Media: Pencil, PITT Pen and COPIC marker on Strathmore Drawing paper, then colored with Adobe Photoshop CS2.
This is the wraparound cover to Bill Willingham's FAIREST, coming soon from Vertigo/DC Comics. It's the new new FABLES spinoff book, and I'm the regular cover artist. I've been a FABLES fan for a while now, and am really excited to be a contributor now!
This one was WORK, I mus say, and not for the reasons you might think... When I do regular covers for a book, it usually takes me 5-7 covers before I figure out how I like to portray the main character.
On THIS cover, I had to commit to how I would portray, what, 13 characters? 'Ugh!' and "Oh, no!'
I'm not going to name all the characters portrayed here, because sharp-eyed FABLES fans seem to be having too much fun trying to guess all of them!

I gotta say, I remember you tweeting or posting here when you first started reading Fables and how much you were saying you enjoyed it. It's kind of cool to see where that enjoyment has taken you in your career. This cover is outstanding. With no discredit to anyone else on the cover, your Rose Red rules.

The art itself isn't bad at all, but it looks like every female character has the same exact face each other.
Even the blondie little girl looks like she has a woman face.

One question if i may - for pieces like these, do you draw them as a whole? Or draw each character separately, then compile in Photoshop?

Rose Red isn't the sister of the Snow White from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. I realize they are just taking artistic license with it which is fine.

I feel bad because I only recognize Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Thumbelina, the Snow Queen, and Rose Red....and I think Prince Charming O.o

Snow Queen (duh)
Cinderella (slippers)
Princess Alder (naked)
*Beauty (usually a brunette in the series but it varies depending on the artist, similar outfit to Belle in B&tB film beginning)
*Bigby Wolf ?!? (dark, unkempt hair, sideburns, trench coat, open collar w/no tie, but no trademark grizzle, honestly the best candidate in my opinion)
Ozma (young, blonde w/OZ clock)
*June ('studying humanity'? perhaps, which might make the man Rodney, but its a bit off model if so)
*Goldilocks (missing the glasses that she had in the previous episodes, but the carrying of coffee might symbolize her 'waking up the 3 bears' story)
Rapunzel (hair)
Snow White (dark hair, white shirt)
Briar Rose (yawning)
Jill (more on model than Thumbelina)
Rose Red (red head, bottle, casual dress)
*It's a wonderful piece, but as a person who has read the entire Fables saga at least 3 times, its a bit disappointing that there aren't more visual queues for the people between Alder and the bedpost. I love Ozma's clock with the OZ.

So you just do the basic coloring with the cool grays and warm grays, then put it in Adobe to color? I was about to applaud you for coloring all of that with straight Copics, but every good artist should know how to cheat.

I'm not familiar with the books, but at the same time I can recognize a few of the characters just from thier appearaqnce/props/body language. I'm always amazed at how stunning and beautiful your works are.
