great.. you describe me the power of copic makers.. your work with makers is amazing... i am learning from each your picture... am just stare at it sometimes...
I imagine that you must work fast .. keep it wett .. then its good to mix copic makers tones isnt it?
I am working with warm grey tones and thats is sometimes hard for me to do smooth transition from light to shadow.. you are expert in this..

I must agree with thecheckeredman. The end results are wonderful. Bringing it a bit back from digital wonderland (or stopping short ) from time to time really warms things up. Showing my age a bit but I love the old line work. Oi, and the textures have ever been the best

Wishes and envy (a bit)

Hey Adam, I'm a huge fan of your artwork (but who here isn't I guess), and I've been wondering something for a while and only just now did I think to ask. I've noticed that on many of your photoshop colored pieces you do this cool thing where you'll convert some of your inks to a different color or lighten them to give a sense of atmospheric perspective or just to make it a different tone. I've always wondered how you do this. Do you just zoom and lasso really close between the inks you want changed and the ones you don't, and do you just fill or paint with a lower opacity, or is there some easier way that I'm not thinking of?

Also, if you're too busy and you know you've answered this question on deviantart before just say so and I'll look for it. Thanks for your time!

That's some amazing value control. And a fantastic drawing.

Do you use reference at all, Adam, or is this fully conceptual?

Just curious, but I noticed on the final version you added the redish tones in the art, is it easier to do in photoshop that win copic markers?

AdamHughes In reply to sunny615 [2011-02-20 18:53:10 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if it's necessarily EASIER, I just like working that way.

sunny615 In reply to AdamHughes [2011-02-20 23:09:06 +0000 UTC]

So you work in tones (mono) first and add color primarily in PS?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamHughes In reply to sunny615 [2011-02-21 06:28:35 +0000 UTC]

Not always. This is just one technique I use.

sunny615 In reply to AdamHughes [2011-02-22 00:29:36 +0000 UTC]

I apologize for asking so many questions, so this will be my last (Thanks!), when you do full color COPIC, do you do tones first and then blend the color or just color straight away?

invikdeviant [2011-02-20 04:45:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, Adam if I may ask, what do you use to make the COPIC blend so seamlessly, like those on her face? I tried but always end up having seams, hard seams like you can see it even from like 2 foot away...or its just my COPIC drying up lol...

He mentioned in the other post how he likes to do it like a watercolor, when the ink is still wet. There is also a blender marker that just has the alcohol medium with no ink.

Once I saw this on the magazine rack, I had to pounce on it!

I gave the markers another go quite recently, [link] . Thing is, I can't afford a big selection of markers, and they don't have as many shades as I would like. What would you recommend as the "barest minimum" of shades for an illustration?

I like how your pinups tell a story. Not only does she look great as always, but there's something going on in the meantime. Always wondered if there was a particular run of comics you illustrated that stands out as a favorite, or maybe a job you learned a lot from.
