Description
Year: 2010Client: Private Commission
Media: Pencil, PITT pen, COPIC marker, Berol Prismacolor pencil on 13.5" X 8.5" Strathmore Drawing paper
This is the sketch for the guaranteed eBay sketch done for Baltimore Comic-Con. Before anyone asks "You did this at a show?" - I didn't. I worked on it from home, and took a day on it. The winner is a friend of mine, so I wanted it to be extra awesome with chocolate sauce and jimmies.
Also, Mantis is an old-school AVENGERS character. I have no idea what her deal is, especially those things coming off her head. I infodumped my childhood.

I only vaguely remembered Mantis so I looked her up. [link] Looks like the character somehow jumped around from Marvel to DC to Eclipse to Image and then back to Marvel again. Weird.
Awesome job you did on her, though.

omg, it's amazing!
do you use a bit of water over copic markers, or simply it's a combo effect due to paper grain and the "natural moisture" of that colors?
PS: finally I got your book Cover Run: quite useless to say that I felt in love with it!

Have to say I dig this. I haven't seen this character in a LONG time so glad to see her. Really dug her design and have to say I am curious where the heck she is in the books. (even if I am more DC than marvel lately)

excellent. Hey those Copic markers, can you buy those at most art stores or is that something your better off finding on the internet?

Both. We used to get them online, but we persuaded my local art store to carry them.

they're a few dollars per marker, not really cheap(especially not the sets) but still, if you just want to try a few of them out they're not outrageously priced.
usually it's the smaller art stores that carry them, if you have a PLAZA anywhere near you I'd try there, it's the only store I've ever seen them in (the actual copic brand copic markers i mean, not the cheap knockoffs).

I'm learning from Jack Hamm's Drawing The Head & Figure. I assume you learned from that book, too?

Oh, cool! I'm drawing every illustrations (skipped you-should-not-do parts) from that book. I'm on page 74 now, it's about arms. I think having knowledge in human anatomy is extremely important.

She's absolutely stunning. Love her face (eyes! lips! bone structure!) and the lines of her hair. ♥
