Description
Since the ART OF WATCHMEN book has come out, I feel comfortable posting the art I did for the 8 minutes I worked on the film...First, the back story. I was contacted by representatives of 300 director Zack Snyder, while 300 was in postproduction, about doing designs for 4 of the 6 main characters from WATCHMEN. Zack wanted me to design the look of the characters, and then do 4 'cover-quality' color illustrations to hep convince the suits & ties at Warner Bros. Pictures to green-light his WATCHMEN film.
I did a first round of sketches, talked with Mr. Snyder, did a second round of looser sketches based on our discussions, and then was given the go-ahead to proceed with designing full illustrations. Since I was running late on CATWOMAN covers as well as other things, I was juggling the assignments. Since I do art for whomever yells the loudest, the WATCHMEN stuff took a minor backburner placing on my To Do List. I never heard from them, they never called or e-mailed saying "Hey, hurry up, you bastard!", so I worked on Selina Kyle.
Then, 300 came out.
It did so well in its opening weekend, Warner Bros. green-lit WATCHMEN the following Monday.
I guess my services weren't required, because I never heard back from the WATCHMEN people. I could've finished the color pieces on principle, like a good freelancer, but I'm so slow that my time is kinda precious, and I don't want to waste time drawing something that isn't going to be used. So, I just chalked it up to "That's business...".
The WATCHMEN people contacted me much later, asking for high-rez versions of the sketches for the inevitable ART OF book. I pointed out that, since I never actually did the assignment I was asked to do, I had never been paid. To their credit, once we agreed on a rate for just the sketches, they check arrived so fast, the envelope was warm, the ink was still wet, and the FedEx guy was out of breath. The WATCHMEN movie guys are a pretty respectable gang, as far as my experience goes.
*****Ozymandias*****
Director Zack Snyder said he really wanted to get away from the gold body suit with purple tunic look for the Big O, and kinda agree wit the sentiment. Making that suit from the comic could make or break the film; if the audience laughs at Ozymandias, WATCHMEN just won't work dramatically.
We discussed ideas, and Zack really liked the idea of keeping the 'Alexander the Great' motif. My design was basically a handsome blonde guy in a cuirass (sculpted breastplate) but with tights on underneath. In the final film, they seem to have gone with a straight-up BATMAN rubber bodysuit, but at least it doesn't look silly (to me, anyways). We'll see how he plays in context, onscreen.
****The Comedian***
As you can see, I was asked to do no designs for Dr. Manhattan or Rorshach. Why? Because Zack said they were going to make it to the screen virtually identical to the comic; they would require no 'adapting'.
Well, since the Comedian is just wearing military gear with a couple patriotic shoulder pads, I kinda thought he wouldn't need to be adapted for screen, either. But, they wanted to see a design, so I did one. It's basically the same as the comic. If I had gone to the final illustration, I would've just given him hyper-accurate & realistic gear; sort of the way Michael Golden loves to draw guns and equipment.
Well, thats my WATCHMEN experience. When people ask me how much involvement I had in the WATCHMEN film, I usually just say: "Well, for $10, I think they're gonna let me see it...".

Thanks for sharing that experience. I'm kind of in a rather similar dilemma "right now" on having secure paid work coming in but the possibility to work for like "8 minutes" on a BIG FILM that still needs to be green lit, yet things are moving at such a slow pace. So I'm juggling my time between two things. Part of me wants to just go with the guarantee of paid work, but the other part is saying GO for the BIG gig and take the risk. I would hate to pass up the big gig and find out a year or two from now it's out on the BIG SCREEN breaking records. - not sure what I'll do.

The contrast between the noble hero and the brutal thug is striking (ah, which is which).
This is some damn tasty artwork.

i would just like to comment and say that i am always inspired by your work. with such a strong likeness to mucha and hints of norman rockwell, its no wonder to me why your work is so attractive and just technically well done.
if you dont mind me asking, would it be too much to ask for some feedback now and again? being in my second year of art school has made crits and comments very important to me and trying to be an illustrator has made it that much more important. all in all i would greatly appreciate any consideration you could give, considering your schedule of course.
thanks!

Thank you very much for your kind words. I wish I could comply with every request for feedback, but I can't. There's simply too many people asking me every day for feedback, critiques, and advice. If I am ever at a convention you are attending, please bring your artwork by for a portfolio review; when I'm at conventions, my time belongs to the fans (mosrtly!), so I will be able to oblige you there.
Thank you for your understanding,

i think i very much prefer your Adrian Veidt to the "batman" suit that they've gone for, your take is classic and not at all hokey or in any way unbelievable, the inclusion of the eye broach holding the cape in place was a wonderful touch. i wish you had had an opportunity to take it to color. thanks for including the behind the scenes info on the pieces, i've wondered about your involement on watchmen for a while now!

I actually prefer your design here for Oz as opposed to the rubber batman suit. One of the problems I've always had with the batman suits is they're so stiff and you can see it in the way they move. Oz is so light on his feet and agile that a suit like that makes little sense to me. Plus a full suit of body armor kinda screws the idea of what he pulls at the end of the book that impressed the hell out of me on the page. (I won't say WHAT he did for the sake of spoilers)

I think the design they went with for Ozymandias is too obviously evil. I agree that the purple and gold would look silly on screen, but all black? If I hadn't read it, I wouldn't be at all surprised at the end. He just LOOKS like a villain.
Of course, that's kind of like giving away the ending to Romeo and Juliet, but there have to be SOME people who haven't read the novel

frank miller seemed rather fond of zack snyder and by all accounts he's a comic fan and a nice guy.
ironically, doing work for dc, like you were, you were still working, basically, for the same people.
but, it's kinda like fox: same company, different department and they don't usually talk.
warner bros. scares the hell out of me, in terms of the giant, monolithic conglomorate.
i like how ozymandias actually looks like a greek statue.

That's for sharing your story! I love it! It's very insightful and quite funny. I definitely love how you your and Zach's to-and-fro reactions.
Ozymandias' costume really shines the best of the two, I feel. I agree that if the film used the costume in the book that people wouldn't stop sniggering. I really love the Alexander the Great motif -- especially that CAPE -- love the cape! -- and was rather disappointed that the motif was very strong, bah! Nevertheless, great work!

Ozymandias look is really tricky.
The thing for me is that the characters still have to look a little ridiculous. The way I read it, it's a more realistic world, so having grown men running around in tights is freaky. On the other hand they are dead serious about it.
How/if they are going to deal with that is one of the things I want to see.

I really like your designs. And from what I have seen of the movie trailers and web content, it seems they are doing the comic real justice in terms of keeping it all intact on the screen (even including the pirate story on the super delux special dvd... tho not doing the alien squid monster thing at the end).
I was initially not excited for the project as I was not real sure it would even be relevant in today's culture, but after re-reading the original, and seeing all that is going on now, and of course, seeing the extended trailer for the movie, I -must- see this movie.
Seeing that you designed costumes for at least two (they basically went with your designs for Silk and Owl), possibly three (Comedian is pretty close too) of the main characters from the film, now that 'must' is a 'need'.

Hey Sir, let me ask: even if your services weren't required, they should have paid you up front for the sketches, right? Or wrong? I don't know how things like that work in US.
I think they should have, since they asked you to do it, and you were spending your work time on it.
Oh, and what size do you use to send the samples to clients (small thumbs, half size with watermark)? I know it's a technical question, but it would be nice to know how the professionals deal with this details.
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
AdamHughes In reply to fake-junkie [2009-02-03 09:07:30 +0000 UTC]
I didn't get paid because I didnt invoice. Since the assignment was taken nowhere NEAR completion, I just kind of went about my business. Since I didn't finish the assignment, I didn't think I had a right to ask for partial payment. Especially since they didn't have anything other than low-rez JPEGs of the art. When they asked for the high-rez versions for the book, I told them I'd need SOME form of remuneration, and they were stunned that I never got paid.
Trust me, they did nothing wrong.
I usually just hand in samples or comps as 72 dpi JPEGS, at whatever dimensions the final art is.
Hope that helps,
-AH!-
