This is the cover I did for the hardcover trade paperback collection of Dark Horse Comic's first SERENITY comic-book miniseries, based on Joss Whedon's tv show & movie.Yet another digital colorization of a gray tonal drawing.
18" X 27" on sketchbook/pad paper; pencil, ink, marker, white paint, Berol Prismacolor pencil, and then Photoshop CS2.
FIREFLY was the bestest, shiniest tv show. Ever.
At the very least, it was my favorite.

Gao gan!! I was just on the Skyplex and got this here wave from the black. I might be in the Bughouse from the rim here but this here is PECK SHINY! Now folks may think I'm a all-fired Serenity geek or a, " Fei fei de pi yan" (Baboon's a** crack), but I'm not on the Drops here or on some mighty Tonic. I just love that thar show.
Now I'm not going to bushwhack any feller but this here be the shiniest picture I've very seen of our crew. I'm Shindigging here! Heck, even them Reavers like this here pick.
Well I's best Git as this Browncoat is in the middle of a "Gen hou zi bi diu shi"(Engage a monkey in a feces-hurling contest), so Adam your work is the Scratch and the loot, but your still a, "Liu kou shui de biao zi he hou zi de ben er zi" (Stupid son of a drooling whore and monkey) for not posting more on the Cortex. But we Browncoats love ya.

I thought the same thing when I first saw this piece! But with the color leaving the bottom half of each character I see more of your distinct style shine through. I think I look at this painting once a week. And of course now that I'm watching the show for the third time I get this sense of gooey joy and nostalgia.

i adore both firefly and serenity, and am so sad they didn't make a trilogy out of the movie...oh well.

This show was awesome! Loved it so much.
Never saw it on TV, but a friend of mine bought me the box set few years back. Fell in love. The movie was win too, so sad though. And left so many questions unanswered.
But man, this is amazing. the tonal value, anatomy, colors, and god, I'm in love with that slight outline. Very awesome.

I received this book as a gift before I was too familiar with your work. After becoming acquainted with your style it is unmistakably AH!
In fact, my friend bought it because of the cover!
As a burgeoning artist I'm finding my most difficult hurdle to leap (artistically) is finding my own style. I love the work that I do (most of the time) but my inspiration doesn't come from one thing or even one theme. I don't even stick to one medium.
Do you have any suggestions or thoughts about what that was like for you, or for someone going through this phase? I'd really appreciate any feedback.
Masterful shading, by the way, but it's not hard with such a lovely subject matter.

As for your suggestion request, 'flailing about in the dark until you find your way' is an extremely viable method of art instruction. You don't really find your own style, it finds you. The actual attempt at trying to find a style will negate arriving at one of your own; you will just be really brilliant at drawing like lots of other people.
I followed in the footsteps of my heroes, and I still do (but in less obvious ways). We should all keep learning until we stop ambulatin' & breathin'. I recommend that you continue having fun playing around with different styles (because any time spent drawing makes you a better artist) until you find something that really, REALLY moves you, moreso than another style or technique.
When you find your bliss, focus a bit more in that area than in others. Play around and experiment with variations in that particular style. Have fun doing many, MANY drawings. Your own personal style will grow and evolve from the act of doing so many drawings; think of it as a sort of benevolent 'industrial byproduct'.
But most of all, have fun while doing it.
Art shold be fun, regardless of how cool Van Gogh looked while being so tortured.
