Description
This is the first image for an e-book I'm illustrating, Poe's The Purloined Letter. I was massively into Poe when I was young, so its cool to have a chance to do some visuals for one of his classics. This story is the last (and best) of his C. Auguste Dupin mysteries, where he literally invented the sleuth detective genre. Almost all the classic sleuths are based on Dupin, including Sherlock Holmes. I decided to make him hunched and dour, sort of mentally referencing Winston Churchill. The foreground character is the nameless narrator; I decided not to go the obvious route and draw Poe himself, because he's too distinctive looking; instead, I went for a generic looking everyman (in the period style, of course). Feedback very welcome on this one; I'll post info when the book is ready (and probably more images along the way).
