Description
If you read mainstream comics, you can probably guess what prompted this. I don't actually read the New 52; just haven't found anything compelling there, but I read the article about Wally's return and found it intriguing. On the one hand, the Flash is the perfect place to introduce some diversity into the DC lineup, since Flash is a legacy character, not a single individual. And I'm very much in favor of introducing some diversity there, because, to be frank, superheroes have historically lived in white fantasy land. Obviously there are some exceptions; some of them great characters, but Normative Whiteness in comics is not hard to see, and its, at the very least, embarrassingly archaic. Remember in Final Crisis #7 where we see a parallel universe where Superman and Wonder Woman are black? And Renee Montoya even observes "do you all look like this here?" Sorry, but people of color being a parallel dimension is pretty cringeworthy, no matter how ironic Morrison was trying to be.On the other hand, the one picture I've seen looked like a white guy with a "black" hair style (though, granted, he is supposed to be "mixed race", and DC's house style, IMO, doesn't really lend itself to ethnic subtlety). I also think that "turning Wally black" feels more like catering to contemporary sensibilities than simply being open to a diverse superhero pantheon. I love Wally West, and while I don't mind him not being a white guy, I think it would be a lot more natural to simply have a new character take over the cowl (lord knows that Barry is dull as dirt). So... I drew this; a (hopefully) cool new Flash who happens to be black. I'm not trying to nitpick, but this is the way I would have gone with it.

Can't say I agree with your assessment of Barry, but otherwise I'd say you're right on the money!

this is awesome...and you're definitely spot on about trying to inject diversity, it has to be done organically...

Yeah, Wally is already an established white character. Even if Wally hasn't been established in the new universe just turning him black is weak. Having a new strong black character take over duties as Flash would be an opportunity to really breathe some freshness into the Flash books.

The natural place for this to have happened was Impulse in the 90's; they brought in a new character to join the legacy. Heck, mixed ethnicity is literally the projected sociological norm, so having one of Barry's descendents be a mixed-race character would be the likeliest scenario.

I don't read the new 52 either, but the image you created instantly captivated me and made a lot of sense.

The New 52 is a flawed concept. Rebooting the DCU could have been awesome; I have no problem with big changes. But Didio's edict that the "classic" DCU need to be what's in their comics has become the corporate model now. Barry Allen has to be the Flash, Hal Jordan has to be GL, Supergirl has to be Superman's cousin Kara Zor-el from Krypton, Barbara Gordon has to be Batgirl, etc ad naseum. They made a rule that nothing significant could be changed, and then tried to reboot their fictional universe. What the heck is the point? They had already ret-conned their way back to the old status quo, then they wipe the slate to establish… the old status quo. I've yet to see a point to actually reading any of it (I tried with Justice League, and it was yawn-inducing before the first arc was finished).
Glad you like this pic; I often scribble these things out and pretend I'm drawing DC books (which I probably will never do).

I tried reading when it first started and aside from Animal Man, I didn't find anything compelling about any of it and quickly dropped it.
"They had already ret-conned their way back to the old status quo, then they wipe the slate to establish… the old status quo." haha true. Didio wanted to make this big splash that ended up being all flash and no substance, and like you said, did almost nothing to change anything. Honestly I was excited about Wildstorm characters being introduced into the DCU but they haven't done anything with it and what they have done has been pointless at best, but that's a whole other bag of monkeys.
