Description
A one-pager I wrote and drew for the Image Comics magazine Image+, in which I responded to a previous one-pager by my buddy Brandon Graham (as excepted in the first panel), a comics artist who feels very, very differently than I do about the topic of accidental tangents in comics artwork. The piece is way, way wordier than I like to do nowadays, but I had to cover a lotta ground in one page. Still, I should've gone with less text, regardless. Oh, well. This page was drawn a few months into my Instagram life-drawing kick, so for this kinda-sorta autobio piece, I goofily decided to keep drawing the physically ideal bodies I was photoreferencing, then tacked a self-caricature head onto said bodies. (I'd sooner set myself on fire than ever photoref from myself.) Made one comical error in the self-portrait image, though: Somehow forgot that my beard is rather notably far from completely dark nowadays. (As in, "Salt 'n' Pepa's here, and they're in effect.") Oops!
BTW, the aforementioned Instagram loaded with life drawing, from which I'll occasionally post pieces over here: www.instagram.com/adam_warren_β¦

This was funny and educational! I like it!
I also like to imagine heβs shouting with the voice of a pro wrestler or something with heavy metal blasting in the background as he tangents about tangents.
(yes I know the meaning of the word but I was trying to make a joke ok)

Good and interesting lesson. I'm a writer, not an artist, so when I learn something from another field of art, it' cool.Β

You look way different from your early caricature appearances. Guessing you're going for more of a chibi/emoji look?

Informative piece. Back in Kubert School my teacher called the one you describe with the "arm-pipe" the Gestalt Method (referring I believe to theΒ Gestalt principle of Grouping,Β though I think they were incorrectly applying as a label when in reality it incorporates a tremendous range of artistic tricks one could potentially use to lure one's eye, not just tangents). I think I filed it away as one of those tricks that's very easy to use, and very hard to use well.Β
Β
Will there perhaps ever be a collected edition of these pages for artists to peruse for advice?Β

Totally not "only" faving this for the awkward but appealing chic-body panels. You make a solid point and as a viewer, these have been distracting as hell, for better or worse.Β

Huh. . Β . Β Advocating on the behalf of tangents, huh? Yeah, I'm gonna have to side with you on this one. In my early days of drawing I used to shoot back at people who'd call me on them in my art " that's where that stuff would be!!" Like somehow I'm not in charge of my own drawing. Lol.Β
I loved reading this tho! Funny and informative

So... there are no actual tangents in this comic page, because they were all intentional?

Can you do all of my past school lessons like this? Β I would remember them so much better if a yelling head on the end of an arm delivered the end of lesson.

I managed to see all of those but the "bump-up tangent".Β I mean, it just looks wrong, but I'm not sure I see the tangent exactly?Β Is it where the figure is bumping against the word balloon/frame?

Against the word-balloon, the edge of the panel, part of another figure... anything where the line almost but not quite makes contact.

I've never heard of comic tangents until now. Maybe because I actively try to avoid doing things like that when constructing the composition of my workpiece. Now I'm going to be obsessively searching through all my work to see if I've accidentally done it!
