Description
Colored version of a commission from our At-Home Con 2011. Pencil drawing, PS CS4 color.I'm not the best colorist in the world, but I feel good about my metalwork. This one worked out pretty much exactly as I envisioned it; a rare thing, and a happy surprise.
Oh, we silly artist folk. Always kicking sand in our own faces.Created a frame so I could maybe do other X-Men in the future as part of a whole "Oversized Trading Card" deal.

Beautiful metal work. Colossus has been a favorite of mine for a long time. And I was so excited when they actually made him gay in Ultimate... and then they ruined him in the last issue and made me cry.
Still gotta love the character. Big Russian Broski in the house!

Yes, the first 50 issues of Ult.X-Men were spectacular. Their decline into unreadable dreck was incredibly sad.

I've always really liked your metal work. (And you're leather/superhero costume material, too. Anything with a reflective surface.) Personally, it's something I'm still trying to get a hang of.

It can be tricky to learn. I studied a lot of reference and watched a lot of artists, trying to mimic what they did to learn why they did it. Now it comes together pretty naturally for me, it just took time to figure out.

Sometimes it's enough to just look at a piece you like as you're coloring and try to mimic the effects by eyeballing it. An early thing I did while learning metal was while working on an armored arm, I looked at the way Adam Hughes colored a pipe in the background of a Catwoman cover. It was enough to learn a few little "A-ha!" things that I've kept ever since.
...And sometimes when you're trying to dupe somebody else's effects, you learn something totally different on accident. Accidental education is some of the best.

What are your thoughts on Marvel striking down on commissioners?

Eh. They're striking down on one guy as a countersuit to make sure no creators ever try and sue for their legal rights again. He wanted them to admit he created Ghost Rider and was entitled to a piece of the buckets of cash they've made off him in the movies, and they wanted to make an example of him so nobody else tries the same thing.
It's a monumental dick move, but I don't think it will creep into other parts of Artist Alley. If it did, it would kill conventions.

I agree. I spend at least 50% of cons in the Alley supporting artists. For what it's worth, if shit goes down, I've got your (and everyone else's) back.
