Description
Color commission for a friend who's picking up at this weekend's Detroit Fanfare Con.Prowl is my favorite Transformer (immediately followed by the Lamborghini Bros. Sideswipe and Sunstreaker). Imagine my glee when I was commissioned to draw him, and then the guy liked the ink so much he upgraded to this. He wanted marker, but I was so psyched to do this I told him I'd do full color for the same price.
I always love the smart, tactical lieutenant characters. Never the leaders - always the "brains behind the curtain" kind of guys. Prowl is like the textbook definition of the ultimate lieutenant character, and might be what shaped the love of that archetype for me.
Close behind is the witty, sarcastic comic relief character (not the idiot comic relief character, who annoys the piss out of me - suck it, Michaelangelo!). When you combine the two into one guy, like with Donatello, the new Tigra, or Tim Drake, I'm in heaven.

This is really cool. I like that there are little to no completely straight lines. I see a lot of Transformer drawings, especially of the old-school designs, that look like the whole thing was done with a straight edge. The way everything here has a slight curve to it, I think, really makes it feel more 3 dimensional and makes it a lot less stiff.

I read a 'How to Draw Robots' piece by Pat Lee and the thing I took away from it most was that you should avoid using rulers and straight edges when you can because, despite how it appears to the naked eye, there are very few perfect lines in the real world. By freehanding the Transformers and using a mix of curved and straight lines, you get something that feels more organic and less stiff even if the subject is made up of nothing but big boxes.
And that's one to grow on.

l'm not usually a mech kinda guy, but
this puts me in the mind of a Micronauts
character that Marvel did, back in the day.
