hahah, I dunno about ins and outs, I mean just being nice and friendly is the best way to get along on a web platform like DA. looks like you've already discovered how to use groups too.
I'd definitely suggest getting a tumblr (as long as you don't mind the occasional liberal drama), since it's a blogging platform it can be a good way to get more exposure due to reblogs, etc. Currently DA/tumblr are the only spots I do my art, but they both have different crowds and exposure which is nice.
