Question. Why is this and a few other works PNG files isntead of JPEG?

I think that's actually reverse: There are a few Jpg's, and mostly PNGS. I'll try my best to summarize the difference between the two formats..

Jpg is what you call a 'lossy' compression format. This means that JPGs will be typically smaller in file size, but they have to throw away some information in the image to do so, which some people claim can't be seen by the untrained human eye, yet some people hold fast to the theory.

PNG is a 'lossless' format, so it holds more info about the image, the file size is a bit larger, but the quality is undeniably better. Again, most people say you can't tell one way or the other. PNG is basically the new GIF. GIF is proprietary to a company, and so someone rewrote the GIF format and made it open source, free to use by all. Since PNG is like GIF, but upgraded a bit, it holds true to GIF's strengths, i.e. transparency, web compatible, so on so forth. PNG also has JPG qualities, such as compression capability. So PNG is a nice middle ground image format.

Here is another comparitive use for each format:

Jpeg is a wonderful format for real pictures, from digital cameras, anything involving outside, people, places, nature, etc.

PNG is a more attuned format for digital images, ESPECIALLY fractals, for all the above mentioned attributes, because in a fractal that you spend 30+ hours rendering, you want all the quality you can get.

Make sense?

A superb script anyway. So far, my favorite due to mod'ability.
