Description Main Entry: la·cri·mae re·rum
Pronunciation: "lä-kri-"mI-'rA-"rum
Function: foreign term
Etymology: Latin
: tears for things : pity for misfortune; also : tears in things : tragedy of life
-----

Tried to represent the four elements in the obvious shape of a tear drop. I don't want to sound too topical, so I'll step off my soapbox for this one when I say that it seems bleakly representative of Earths future state if the path continues to be dominated by human ignorance and ego.

-----

Used Apo3d
slight Pitch, only 20 degrees
slight zTranslate 0.01 I think
Ngon variation, with only 4 Transforms and the default random gradient when the program was opened.
Postprocess was not needed on this one even though I was extremely eager to play with it finally after reading CabinTom's post render tutorial [link]

Went out on a limb and used 1.0 FR
OS 5 (6 needed more memory than I had available unfortunately)
and 12,000 quality
Rendered at 600x1200
And it worked beautifully I think!

I'm going to pull my own goat here and say that the quality of this particular render is what I have been trying to obtain since I first downloaded Apo years ago. I am extremely pleased with the refinement of this render.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my Note and generously supplied suggestions, tutorials and personal preferences:

I worry too.
This is lovely.

My biggest worry is that we ONLY worry. No one has the gonads to do anything about it. Why are we so terrified of change for the good?

I think we ONLY worry about far too many things.

I understand your impatience. There are many people everywhere that are impatient and not only about the earth.

All our lives my husband and I have tried to react to change things. The ecological drama we seem doomed to, is the latest problem.

You can change small things towards a better direction but a global change for a global problem seems...problematic.

We must all use our brains, our ballots, (to what good, yet we must) and never give up.

Resistance is all we have.

Sorry to sound glum. The situation all over the world is glum to so many.

Good luck...to us all.

Well put. And while it is glum, it should be. It should be very gloom and doom, and people should be angry about it. Infact, people need to reread the Constitution again (when was the last time most of us read it, 5th grade? And who cared about it then?) so that we can be prepared for elections and defensive against stolen liberty. There is a great quote, one of which is a decal on my computer case right now, that says:

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both"
-Benjamin Franklin

And there are countless others that can be applied to today's problems...as if it's happened before...or as if they knew it would come to this...

...and have we listened?

Fortunately I'm just now, at age 25, getting to that age where these issues matter, where I could, theoretically do something about them. Old enough to finally have the ability to be angry about these large problems. And old enough to know that with the current enmasse of lobbyists and beaurocrats, these issues will NEVER get solved.

vote Ron Paul. Let him shake things up. It can't get any worse (unless Mitt Romney is elected president...)

I'm afraid I can't vote for anyone in your country although your president's decisions affect my country. I live in France. I didn't vote for our president either!

And let's not forget the childish acts we took upon the French, pouring out wine and such. Do you know that most small businesses over here have adapted the trend of calling 'french fries' freedom fries? Isn't that ridiculous? Am I supposed to be proud to live in a nation like that? I could go on and on...

As unfortunate as it is for me as an American to have to say, our president's decisions seem to be affecting every country.

Funny how this country thought Bill Clinton's little 'side skirt' was the most atrocious act to ever be commited in office, so much so that an impeachment was in the works...just look at us now...after all, we are Americans...out-doing ourselves time after time...if only we had the discipline of the Japanese.

Hi there, this is a slice of my opinions. I'm an English/French bi-national.

Everyone is manipulated more or less. It's a fact of life.

Please be careful of admiring the discipline of the Japanese. Remember their wartime discipline and that of the Nazis. Discipline leads to unquestioning obedience and to oppression. Well facism lies that way.

I would say it doesn't matter if you are proud of your country of not. Patriotism is not necessarily a virtue for me.

What matters is resisting oppression in all it's forms and especially its economic form, which to me is at the heart of all our problems. Power causes opression, and it is present in all our relations at all levels, national and international, and personal. It's in our nature and I think we should be aware of it, and try to find ways of controlling it, when it is opressive.
Power goes hand in hand with money. The only counter-power is resistance and grouping together.

For ecological problems, GreenPeace seems to be doing a good job (but beware of the green fundamentalists!). To fight the injustice of governments there is Amnesty International.
There are countless organisations although they may only have a marginal impact.

I am wary of those who pretend to hold "the truth". That means they will coerce you into thinking like them, religions the formost.

OK, this is an interesting exchange but I mustn't abuse.

Be intelligent and critical. Never stop learning and resist.
I wish you well.

And yes, you are correct about the fascist inevitability of those cultures as recorded in history.

1984 is a good example of that....some tactics of which are being applied in Brittan. (can you say telescreen?)

Well said. I think we can at least agree that we are on the same page. It's good to know that people all across the world think alike. We just need more people that think like us in positions of power. Less catering to the comfortable and more willing to push the necessary.

One day, we will have our wishes. Like you said, small things first.

It's not hard to see what a tired subject 'mother earth' has become. I am a man, but I understand the male dominance of past generations and how much has transcended into present society. The lack of respect for the female sex and the ego that frames it. I wonder how this world would be reacting if it were 'brother nature' instead? I bet 'father time' wouldn't have to tap his watch as anxiously.

In my experience, upping OS does little to nothing in practice, and a 1.0FR gives a lot of blur (too much, unless that's what you want).

Render this with OS1, FR .3... and compare

I'll humor you. IMO, the render quality on this piece is perfect, but I am always accepting suggestions and tips, so while I'm at the Horror Convention tomorrow, I'll render it with your settings. Thanks for the suggestion thearchon.

JLarenART In reply to Addicted2fractals [2007-10-13 05:49:14 +0000 UTC]

High FR is fine like I said, if you want a lot of blur. As far as OS is concerned, yes it is supposed to "increase the resolution" in effect with higher settings... but in my renders I can see no difference between 1 and 4. I do everything at around 9000x11000 with .3-.4FR and 6k quality, which yields beautiful results... so you are probably overkilling with 12k there as well.

You are welcome to do whatever you think works best for you, but you may be adding a lot of unnecessary waiting to your life

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Addicted2fractals In reply to JLarenART [2007-10-14 18:56:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, it seems like one way or the other, whether you increase size or increase OS, the render will take longer. Over sample increases the size, then shrinks it for you to condense the pixels and improve quality, where as you increasing the size (and in your case, for prints, which is understandable) would mean that you'd have to downsize it in PS. Is there a significant difference in time for size vs. OS? I'll give it a try, like I said, I'll give anything a shot.

Oh, and for the piece you suggested I use 0.3FR and 1OS on, for what the picture is, it did not come out well. Very pixely and jagged. I can post it if you'd like to compare. I find the one that's submitted to be the better of the two.

Thanks for the suggestion though. I will try an OS of 1 while tripling the actual size, then shrink it in PS, and compare. lol, Don't get me wrong, if time can be saved, I'm all for it. I hate waiting hours for a render to finish. In fact, I'm planning to build a desktop server just for rendering with Apo. I'm shooting for 10ghz.

JLarenART In reply to Addicted2fractals [2007-10-14 19:37:30 +0000 UTC]

Yea I know what OS does, and there is nothing that increases render time more than upping OS.

Actually, I don't really downsize anything, my renders are clean at full-size. All of my latest source files are 24x36 at at least 300DPI. Needless to say my computer has a fun time handling them

On this piece, I guess if .3 made it jaggy then somewhere in between might give a nice balance of blur and sharpness. It's just my opinion that the posted version is more on the blurry side.

Either way, I always used to go for 3OS or 4OS, and there is no real gain between that and OS1 in the work I do, but that's just me!

How do I save a 300dpi picture in PS? I thought you only have the choice on a New project? Is there a way to convert it, or do I open up a new 300dpi window and copy/paste my fractal into it?

That's what my fiance said! a tree inside of it. I tried to incorporate elements and destroyers of those elements; fire, nature, water, wind. Almost has a tornado effect, like things are being hurled around.

Definitely my favorite in my gallery.

I'm really glad you share the same excitement for it as I do!
