Nah, I don't think you're snooty or offensive in the least, and I completely understand what you're saying. With commissions like these it all depends on what the client is after, however. 9 times out of 10 they want a portrait that does not distort the character's face because it is intended for a specific purpose, such as a visual guide while writing, or a roleplay avatar, or a pin-up for their wall. I have very rarely come across a request that has not been for a serious portrait.

With my personal work it varies depending on the character or what I have in mind for a final piece. I do tend toward more serious or gentle pieces, yes, at least in finished work I post here on DA. The majority of my unpolished sketches are less serious and more expressive, but I don't often show them to the public because I am...something of a perfectionist, and very insecure when it comes to letting anything of mine be seen that is rough and full of mistakes. ^__^;;; When artwork became my job it was important to keep up a good image, to only show work of professional quality that upheld a certain standard, and anything imperfect or frivolous was kept out of public sight. I've been trying lately to relax that standard a little, to post a few more sketches or silly things, but I'm still very afraid of having my skills judged on something that is sub-par, of people taking seriously something that is not meant to be, or faving something sketchy more than a finished piece. I wouldn't want a publisher, for instance, or someone looking for artwork designs for their merchandise, to come across a messy sketch as their first and only exposure to my work. But on the flipside I can definitely see how that would make my work rather boring for longtime watchers, especially those who remember when I used to do art just for fun and I wasn't nearly so afraid to post goofy sketches. I do apologize, and I'll try to be less rigid and afraid in the future.

If there is one thing I've learnt while getting my act back together after a long "art-siesta", is to just keep drawing anything and everything, never stopping or giving up even if it's foreign to you. The more you limit yourself, the more you tend to draw yourself into a corner, and that's scary. I can understand why you're insecure, a lot of us dislike being judged and don't want to be at the brunt of harsh criticism, and it's very normal to feel that way. But if it's any comfort to you, we here at dA, even as professionals, are all learning something new, every day. Don't be afraid of the initial responses you might get. There are always those who are on the lookout to bring you down, so don't let it get to you. Let yourself be the judge and explore. Make mistakes, so what? That's the trick to growing as an artist, no?

That said, I would dearly love to see more carefree sketches from you. Whatever mistakes you might make, we as your supporters are with you all the way, I am sure of that.

I do--I draw a lot of thing, I just never (almost never) post unfinished art that does not reflect my best work. Nobody sees them except friends, usually, because of the standard I have to upkeep as an artist for hire. ^__^;;

Aww... true, true... =/ I can understand that. I wish you all the best in future projects, Adele. You can do it. Watching you grow as an artist since 2003 (first comic was the exploding cake, lol!) until now was exceptionally fun and inspiring, and I have no doubt that another breakthrough will be coming soon enough.
