Description "From the moment he had come to this world she knew of him, perhaps even before, and forever after. She knew the burdens of his heart and how his thoughts seemed not to be thoughts but riddles planted in his consciousness like so many weeds. How she loved him for his pain, it consumed her, those memories of his that she remembered and he did not. In him would be a revelation of her memories, she knew, but she would not speak of those things. She would not speak of anything. She could not. An interdiction beyond life had come upon her. She was silent.
But the wind... the wind could whisper his name for her."

My entry for Delurianne's art contest back in 2007, featuring characters from her haunting and captivating story "The Cradle of Whispers". She is not only a talented artist, but an amazing writer as well! I can't possibly do her characters justice, but this is my interpretation of Isobel and the ghostly Elessario. The thorns and flowers symbolize not only the differences in their characters, but also the hardships and rewards Isobel experiences throughout his unusual lifetime. The birds represent fleeting memories and freedom.

I also played with a vague "hidden image" of sorts within the linework, since Isobel is known as a Dragon Lord. If you look closely, you might be able to see a dragon's head and neck in the forest, and the rest of its body and wings suggested by the characters' positions and clothing. This may help: [link]

Hey! That's pretty cool. It's like trying to see the pictures that star constellations portray...only...not quite so difficult. ^_^' I especially like Elessario's face. Very beautiful.

Very cool! I *do* see the hidden image-I haven't seen someone on DA do that before, yet, I think. It looks like an illustration from a children's fairy tale or something!

*sigh* your linework never ceases to amaze me.

So is this a cleaned up sketch then? Or do you naturally draw extremely cleanly? I don't think I've ever seen you post a messy drawing at all *chuckles*

AdeleLorienne In reply to JessicaMDouglas [2007-11-25 02:11:56 +0000 UTC]

lol, no, I never sketch cleanly. I spent far more time on this erasing lines than actually drawing them. I have posted messy sketches before, but very rarely. I'm a perfectionist, and it bugs me when people see unfinished work and point out all the flaws I already intend to fix. Or they assume it's a finished piece (I never understand that..) and go praising it up the wazoo when I know it's still in the junk stage. x_X;

ahahahahahahahah I... I so know how you feel. I post wips because I've had a lot of people ask, but oh god, I kind of want to strangle everyone for both situations. (it's why I don't bother replying. I really should just take off the comments on those).

*chuckles* I'm sorry. I'm totally inundating you with questions, but I'm so farkin' curious now. Is what you posted up the actual piece? Or do you clean it up in photoshop? It's just so very, very white and smooth I'm kind of boggled *laughs* (it probably doesn't help that I can't stand erasers so I never see this kind of cleanness on my own work. Uh... ever.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdeleLorienne In reply to JessicaMDouglas [2007-11-25 02:52:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's the actual piece. I normally use 84-90 bright printer paper, so it's pretty white. The only thing I clean up in Photoshop is the grit my scanner likes to throw in (I have no idea how all that stuff manages to get under the glass!). I'm constantly using erasers, have to darken the lines I want to keep more than once, and I usually have to erase all the white areas over again when I'm finished to get rid of any smudging.

JessicaMDouglas In reply to AdeleLorienne [2007-11-25 03:02:44 +0000 UTC]

ahah oh man, I'm sitting here shuddering at the thought of all that erasing right now, but clearly it's worth it.

... your scanner does that too eh? Mine somehow got a smudge of india ink under the glass. It had it on the top, from when I didn't realize a piece of a painting wasn't completely dry, but it got under the glass too and that blows me away.

o_O; Wow, even ink under the glass? That is so weird..

JessicaMDouglas In reply to AdeleLorienne [2007-11-25 03:48:18 +0000 UTC]

yeah and what really sucks is there's *no physical way* to get under there. I took it in to my techie and he said that I'd have to send it into the company to get fixed, because they made it impossible to take apart without specialized tools.

Wow, beautiful. I love the way that the flowing hair and the twining branches and vines seem to kind of flow into each other, so that they're all mixed together, a very nice touch.

Isobel's eyes feel a little too far apart to me, but other than that, good job. And I love the hidden dragon message. ^_^

i'm sorry; the hidden-image thing isn't working for me (not even after i look at your "here it is" jpg. :\

the linework by itself is clean and detailed as usual, but to me it's just an intricate portrait.

if you'd like to make the hidden image work, emphasizing the lines of the hidden image instead of the contours of the characters might help; similarly, editing the forest to help the eye travel around the hidden picture would also help.

I like the hidden image concept, and the lineart is amazingly awe-inspiring. This looks like a highly detailed piece; how long did it take you? I can't imagine spending such time, while also trying to incorporate a hidden image!

I've found the dragon! It was not immediate, but I didn't give up. That's a really nice drawing, a pity we're not gonna see it in color... I think that just maybe we're able to still see the dragon, depending on the tones you use in the forest and characters. Just maybe. ^^
