I'm pretty sure no one would disagree that the gym rosters in XY were underwhelming.

I tried to address that, by increasing the number of Pkmn they use to something more similar to the roster of BW2 when playing in Challenge Mode, except I also gave the final gym a 5th Pkmn, like we've seen to be the case in some games before (any Hoenn game).

I also wanted to make their teams better represent each gyms theme.

Some specific thought examples:
-adding Binacle as a Water type to the Rock gym that features a waterfall and is located on a beachside, replacing Amaura (to save it for Wulfric) with Dwebble, who is also not weak to Grass
-adding Medicham as a fully evolved Pkmn with mid-range stats, while also bringing more type diversity , replaxing buff dude Machoke with a more agile Sawk
-replacing the random generic mid-stage flytrap Weepinbell with a more "definite" Carnivine lead, adding Trevenant as a tree to go along with the entire gym layout being a giant tree
-replacing Emolga with Dedenne (why use the gen5 pikaclone when there's a gen6 one?), adding Manectric as he had no single type yet and it nicely matches his outfit with the primary blue colour
-Mr.Mime is just weird and the Psy type doesn't help differentiate the gym from the gym that follows it. Also, a more annoying Prankster Klefki instead of Mawile who is really weak without a mega. Adding Azumarill for a physical threat
-replacing the weird Slowking with 2 Psychic Pkmn that are more associated with outer space, Gothitelle and Starmie
-adding a Mamoswine so that there is at least a potential threat to the Fire types, as well as Aurorus to add at least one not weak to Fire

Another big reason why the XY gyms were awfuly easy, is that the movesets of the Pokemon were really underdeveloped (a majority of them don't even have 4 moves...). I might try adding moves/abilities to this some day.
