My biggest grip on the first one is how hard it is to imagine her doing expressions.
For the life of me, I just can't imagine her screaming with a face like that.

It's probably because I have better experience after the 1 year skip, so I could see what I was lacking back then.

I can't remember exactly. But I'm not a guy who can finish a painting in one sitting after a few hours.
I tend to break them into several days so I can rest my eyes. Which resulted in me being able to see the flaws and mistakes before fixing and proceeding.

If I remembered correctly, the new one took about 2-3 days in total.

It takes me several days to manipulate one photo as well. You have to give your eyes a rest, and reexamine your work.

I really like the stylized look of the newer one. It looks like it can covey a greater sense of fear/dread (just my own opinion though).

That's exactly why I changed it. It's easier to show fear and dread in the new looks.
