Charge Nurse Amanda Smith and Staff Nurse Jane O’Connor in the mental health intensive care unit were taken taken aback with the speed with which Charley was returned to their tender mercies.
“I told you this son of a gun was faking it to get discharged from here, Donna,” Amanda said as the blue clad acute assessment sister and her team wheeled a stirring Charley into the ICU once more. Donna looked a little sheepish. “Yes, well, lessons learned, Mandy,” she acknowledged. “He’s coming round from the sedative now, but you’ll have to go easy on the drugs for now.”
Amanda went over to the semi-conscious patient and pulled open his eyes. “Yes, he’ll be awake soon,” she remarked, “and I see you have him restrained AND gagged.” The charge nurse smiled slightly. “A bit foul mouthed was he?”
Donna didn’t say anything but nodded ruefully.
“Ok, you girls can leave him with us now. Good job.” Amanda said and, with a distinct set of gratitude, Donna and her team headed to the cafe for some much needed post-incident refreshment and debriefing.
Amanda called Jane and two of her white uniformed colleagues over. “Ok, ladies - let’s get him into a bed. Four point restraint please.”
The nurses wordlessly and efficiently unstrapped Charley from the trolley and lifted him quickly onto the adjacent bed and began retying the man to his new berth. “Do we take out the gag, sister?” one of the students asked.
“Not yet.” replied Mandy who looked down at Charley, whose eyes, now wide open, burned with anger and resentment at her as the women bound him. “What DID you say to those nurses, young man?” she mused.
