I've once read somewhere, that the main difference between sci-fi fans and fantasy fans is that the first are those who not only accept but also welcome the chnage, and the others are those that are afraid of it. Of course this is not as straightforward as it seems, but, for example, I consider myself a sci-fi fan first and foremost, and the fantasy comes second, but I want to write my own fantasy epic because the usual fantasy stories are just too, equal. They're all the same. All the vampire stories are the same, all the epic fantasy is the same... And I say this as a guy who likes fantasy.
Mass Effect may be like Star Wars, or Galactica, but is not the same, ence the difference.
At least those are my two cents
