I've got my own meaning seeing this picture : religion use to delete the face, and so the identity. But also that each man interprets and deforms the religion, what explain its drift..

I had an entirely different meaning in my head until I saw your description. It's funny how people can find their own messages in art even if they weren't the intention of the artist. I've been told that before but I never saw it for myself until now.

Forgive me for the whole "Interpretation" thing... But I see it as bearing a cross cut out of your face, so I think it symbolises overdevoted faith and being blinded by religion so your outlook on life is obscured by what religion tells you.
