Calliope: Darling, darling! No need to be so dreary! This ain't no gothic story.

Melpomene: Nah-uh. Now you sit down and let *us* tell this one. A story of unlikely love - something that is surprisingly rare among the gods of Olympus.

Thalia: Ha! Ain't that the truth! You know, for immortals, the gods got no clue on how to walk the walk after they done talk the talk.

Clio: But this story started long before Persephone went down to the underworld, ya know. It happened waaaaaaaaaay before that, up on Mount Olympus...

The Gods had all gathered together to celebrate. It was a ceremony to initiate Area and Athena, the first born children of Zeus and Hera, into their godhoods. Ares was given the sword of war, and Athena her helm of wisdom. The gods cheered in congratulations. But Demeter, the goddess of the Harvest, grew somber as the festivities carried on. For in recent times she had longed for a child of her own, and seeing Zeus fawn over his eldest children only made the longing in her heart grow bigger. Despite Hera's encouragement, she did not want to take a husband. For she was a woman devoted to her work: all day, every day, she laboured to fill the fields with crops, and the mortals adored her for the plentiful bounty she provided. But that kind of life did get lonely.

Even the goddess Amphitrite, wife to Poseidon, noticed Demeter's gloom. And though she tried to offer comfort, maybe even encouragement, nothing could seem to shake Demeter from her growing sadness. Not until one day, when she suddenly had an idea...
