Description
I can't even remember when I started this. It was a long time ago, at least three years. Originally I wanted to include it with the Best of SenshiStock book but I never developed it as much as I wanted to for the book. Instead of keeping it unfinished forever on my harddrive where no one would see it, I finally just decided to upload it here. It's really incomplete but I hope the basic stuff I talk about will be helpful. The initial pose used is
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards can be found at DrawRight.com . (It's a great book, really amazing.)
I really hope that some of you get a lot of use from this!
You can use other techniques in combination with this one (like using balls and boxes for different parts of the body). Use all the tools available to you to make the best art you can make!

I'm currently attempting to draw the line of action based on the poses in this tutorial by looking at them (or more accurately, striving to see them through the artist's eye) from my laptop screen. It does hinder me somewhat because 1) I don't have an image printed out so that it's next to the paper and 2) Because of #1, it means I can't make efficient use of a straight edge to plot out the tilting lines in the gesture.
Other than that, this tutorial looks like it'll come in handy for me.

If you can't print them out you should still be able to get the angle using a straightedge, but it might be a but more of a challenge to transfer it

This is extremely useful! IΒ have been your watcher for awhile even I have not used the reference yet as I just get a feeling it will be useful one day. Now I go back full speed on drawing and reading this is just a nice step to begin with! Thanks for putting effort on creating this! It really helps!

This is a really interesting way to do it I will try it this way. I really think figures will look more vibrant if that will be considered.

This is brilliant! Β I've been retraining myself since getting Andrew Loomis' 'Figure Drawing for All It's Worth' for Christmas. Β Completely changed the way I think about drawing figures, and his method is essentially the one you describe starting with gestures, then stick men, then adding a pelvis and chest box and so on. Β You'll think I'm just making this up, but I've been using the gold standard figure reference text (Senshistock to Go) and working through it a page at a time using the new method. Β In fact, I'm going to scan some and upload them so you'll believe me.

Wow! A really really helpful and well-put together tutorial! And some great poses, too! It's wonderful that you feel confident enough to post your body as pose pics, Β a lot of people seem insecure about their bodies, but dear you've got no reason to be insecure!! Thanks for the tutorial! Β

Thank you so much. This is the best drawing tutorial I've come across. My stick people actually look all artsy and fancy and stuff as opposed to looking like stick insects. Or cartoons. I always make them cartoons. It's my way of crumpling failed origami into a paper ball.Β

This is indeed very useful - thank you . I usually tend to get lost in anatomical correctness and abandon the personality in a drawing :I. Looking at poses the way you described it is better
