Strange registry nr. for a burke class.

NCC-0301 would be more acurate, more like Starfleet Battles.

Depends on the beta canon. This one is focused on the overarching history of the Federation (and pre-Federation) and the ships of Timo's The Hobbyist's Guide to the UFP Starfleet and Its History. In that case, it matches very well in his developing registry schemes.

If I may ask, what does the term 'nearspace' mean?!  Does this mean the ship can not stray far from a starbase?!  Or does this maybe mean the ship stays near a starbase to defend it?!

Good question.

According to Timo, the design was originally intended to patrol the larger, more-established space lanes, and was not provided the capability of range endurance greater than two-years. Follow the link above for more details.

Oh, OK.  Thank you for clearing that up.  So she would not go on extended exploratory missions like the larger cruisers.  I think Voyager (Intrepid class) might be one design that was put through the fire to see how she handled on a really long trek away from home for years at a time.  A smaller ship but proved to be a capable explorer and defender.  I am guessing this 'Burke' class might be a few small steps above a 'perimeter action vessel' such as the Aykazi (spelling??) class.

In my view (just mine), this is decades before Star Fleet had professionalized to the point of developing advanced superiority doctrines, such as those that led to the perimeter action ships. I see Star Fleet as far more reactionary in the very early 23rd century.

So, in that light, they're developing ships to meet the issues they have already experienced (or are experiencing). In this case, they're trying to "re-win" the last major conflict (the Romulan War), while also dealing with one-off Klingon incursions. If you follow our release of the Burke subclasses over the next 2-3 weeks (12 total), you'll see development of the overall Burke class specifically, and how Star Fleet's strategic thinking develops. It's not as grand as when seen over the larger picture, which is why I *really* recommend people download Timo's three volumes on the history of Star Fleet.

But, hey: thanks for the discussion. I could do this all day.

I was never clear on when the Romulan War was.  I thought it might have been shown in ENTERPRISE (series) but nope.  And the results of the conflict and how a treaty might have eventually been reached.

In Timo's canon, it runs from 2156-2160, right up to the creation of the Federation. I think there were grand designs to have the war in Enterprise, but...you know the end of that story. To be honest, I don't think there seriousness could have been well-captured in that series, since a lot of beta canon has lots of independent battles all over the future border area of the Alpha-Beta quadrants, and there would be a "need" to have the NX-01 at most of them, since the show is visual in nature.

I've heard the post-series novels do a good job of the conflict, though.

In the season four ending they mention that six years have passed to that point and the NX-01 was to be mothballed in a museum but Archer would get another ship.  That was set right at 2159 or 2160.  So, we could have had another season with the start of the war.  I actually like ENTERPRISE and wanted to see at least a full 7 year run just as the other series had.  IF they didn't do that ending episode and went for a 5th season, we might have had gotten into the war around 2156 since season one was 2151.  I think you are correct that originally they might have planned that being seen but the axe came down and the show was canceled and they quick made an ending to the series with Riker and Troi appearing as guest stars.

Full agreement. Like the other shows, it was starting to hit its stride in seasons 3 & 4, but...it went the way of TOS instead.

Also, I will admit that I liked the opening theme (The 1980s style Power Ballad) from the first season of the series.  I liked it as I grew up with that kind of music as well as other kinds of music.

This baby is tricked out with deflectors. See the blue rectangles on the forward rim? That's right...deflectors. And, if you act now, we'll give you three handheld deflectors. For free!*
