I used to hate faces especially - but I had an art teacher say once "paint what you see - don't paint what you think you see."
Took me a while to get what he meant, but it was the best advice I ever got. When I paint faces I really don't see a face at all but instead, sort of in my mind, I break it down into areas of shade and mark them off in seperate shapes. Shapes of White, Light grey, dark grey, black. I look carefully for patterns in the skintones and try to break it down into areas of predominant shade.
I only started doing it this way about a year ago and has taken some practice. I don't know if I've made much sense here - lol!!

Ugh, I want it. that's an awesome painting. Acrylics never seem to agree with me. How did you go about doing this picture? I struggle with human features and structure. Don't suppose you've got any tips for me?
