I really cannot belive how long this took me to complete. It took me restless hours, a few days, and constant line work to create this piece. So, here it is; this is the piece that I will be going to submit for the Kubo and the Two Strings Story Within contest. I have really struggled, and I mean really, really hard to create this. For this piece, I wanted to illustrate how some good memories of loved ones can often bring back feelings of torture and pain that gives us grief. So, I decided to illustrate Kubo in that particular situation. As for inspiration, I based the atmosphere of this piece on the many times that I have experienced death and loss. To me, my most devastating memories of facing death were particularly the deaths of both my grandparents in Fresnillo, starting with my grandmother years ago, and in the years that followed, my grandfather. Back then, I was never really aware of death in our family. But when my grandfather died, it was tragic. Then, some years later, some of my uncles in Ensenada also shared untimely fates, but the more tragic one was way back in this year, when my dad learned that his brother died from a coma due to a motorcycling accident. It really crushed me, because my dad would have to leave town to attend the funeral. So, it is safe to say I have had a pretty bad experience with death. Of course, in this one, Kubo is haunted by memories of his loved ones, one with his mother, and the other with Monkey. The bottom illustration, showing Kubo being tortured by one of the Sisters, it represented how my neverending struggle to cope with death would often restrain me. I'm so sorry about the long description,c but this is personal to me. So, I hope you guys like it, and wish me luck in the contest!
