I think the most important thing you can do when working on your colors is do constant color studies from nature, still life, photos or even other artists. I'm far from an expert but when I first started I was terrible with color selection, but over the years, practicing and doing studies has helped improve my abilities vastly. I seriously cannot stress it enough. Practice, practice, practice.
