Description Here is the full and completed version. I got really lazy at the end and decided to just post pictures. Perhaps I'll get un-lazy sometime and really get in-depth with this thing.

Anyway, this thing isn't to be reposted, though you can link it anywhere you like. Take this from me and incur my wrath. You have been warned.

Application of "sprite splices" for larger artworks ?
What a wonderfull idea ! In fact I already had a try at it in a WIP
but your tutorial is crystal clear about the process for the custom mugs ^^

Splicing FE9/10 mugs isn't anything new, honestly, but it makes things a lot faster.
This tutorial is really old, though. x[

Yeah, shure, it's as old as the game is..sort of xD

But anyway, it's an usefull tutorial what can also be applied with digital and traditional
drawing.Β I mean, if you draw a large mug like FE9/10 style but fail a part (like a arm) it's good
toΒ know how to correct it by redrawing it somewhere esle and "splicing" it in a digitalΒ media.

I know too much pepole who do not even think of this technique and restart
from scrath,Β succeding the previous "fail" part, but failing somewhere else ^^"

When I first found your account, I browsed through and saw this, and jaw dropped. I told myself that I'd make time to try what it says sometime.

So, I finally set aside time, to try it. I picked out my character, and got some refs, and started to decide what pose to give him. I decided to go and look at what pose I gave him in his art I made a while ago. He has his left hand on his hip and his right at his side. So, I spliced, and outlined, and drew most of the clothes. Then, I come back and look at this, and realize that it's the same general pose your character has, here! I totally facepalmed. Didn't intend to copy the pose.

Anyway, this has been a great help so far. I'm around figure 6, right now.

XD It's a pretty generic pose, so no worry. I don't think AK would actually even put a her hands on her hips, like, ever. She's more of a folded arms kind of person, but that's just asking for a bunch of unhappiness.

:] Good to hear. I'd love to see your final result.

I can't even think of a character other than Tibarn who has arms folded, and I think that would be hard to wing it, without a reference.

Sure. ...Gosh, I've messed with the hair so freaking much. I think FE sprite hair is very logical in it's placement, so the art I had didn't help as much as I thought it would. But, I'm around figure 10, now.

It'd be a little more like FE9 Calil's pose, actually. Just less flirty and more condescending. But yeah, it's unhappy either way. XD

Urgh. Hair. >>; I've only just started getting hair to make some semblance of logical sense, and for that matter, AK's hair makes ABSOLUTELY NONE. Just any old reference works, though. I mean, it's pretty much just digital painting now.

Fire Emblem Planet. Huge FE sprite resource.

Holy cow. That's...massive. I don't even have a tablet. I might still try it, but man, such a time for me to suck at Photoshop. *Stares at the awesome.*

XD Thanks.
You'll work into it rather quickly. You only need a few tools if you like normal CGing. Even if PS looks intimidating, I think you'll have fun just messing with the tools. It's all right if you don't have a tablet. Just be sure to save often in separate files in case you flop.

This is AMAZING!!! This helps me out so much! But could one use a program other than photoshop to recolor hair... or anything else on the sprite (full custom work like this is mostly out of my reach)?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aeorys In reply to Red-Geist [2008-06-09 22:30:08 +0000 UTC]

:]

Sure. I just use Photoshop 'cos I don't have any other program to work with.

LOLz The lineart alone took me about 3 hours. d:

Huh really? Did you use a mouse or something like that? I just plugged in my tablet and traced away and added as I went along on it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aeorys In reply to aznswordmaster1 [2008-06-09 06:40:45 +0000 UTC]

d: Nope. Used my tablet. The drawing only took me a few minutes, but getting the lineart cleaned up took 3 hours. Drawing isn't a slow process for me; editing just takes forever.
