Description
Umm.. since quite some people asked me how I do lineart, and make them so clean... so I decided to make a tutorial on how I do traditional inking XD;; Some of the principles could be applied to digital inking as well!! Well, I think it's better to master the basics (lineart) first then only proceed to the next step (colors) eh?? This is the first time I'm making a tutorial, so forgive me if I made any spelling mistakes or typo mistakes ya!!Feel free to comment or ask questions!! 8D
I took reference on the style of this tutorial XD;; Although it's a completely different kind of tutorial though XP
Yume's painter tutorial
Artwork inspired by this kind of 'creature' in a shoujo manga, I dunno how to translate the title nor the mangaka name... Here's the manga cover !! There's this kind of 'beings' in the manga called Spicas. The artwork's design is based off those Spicas :3
Extra tips:
- For those of you having a hard time drawing long curvy lines, you could try getting something called a Curve Ruler for practise!! 8D You could get it in most stationery shops I think!!
What do u use to color your drawings that you outline??
Adobe Photoshop, sometimes I use my prismacolor markers to color them too ^^
How old are you?
Errr... there's a clue on my front page...
I'd love to see some reflectiveness in the eyes also.
OK this isn't a question, but I usually do the eye details, the iris, highlights and the reflection when I'm colouring later!! ^^
If i do alot of sketchy stuff like 10000 layers >.< (exagerating) of lines over one place does it effect inking?
Well, if you feel that it's impossible to clean the pencil sketch later, probably you should put a paper on top to trace the sketch again ^^ Or if you're brave enough, you could trace-ink instead of trace-sketch too, a lightbox helps!! ^^
Could I ask what kind of paper you worked with, and how large it was?
DoubleA paper (Thai company, dun think it's available in UK/US yet o_O;; ) it's 80gsm, A4 sized
And did you go through any process during scanning to make the lines so crisp and neat, and the background so white?
After I scan I adjusted the brightness and contrast a little, just a little, and I clean off all the dusts and little spots with photoshop's eraser tool ^^

Thank you so much for this incredible tutorial. I was finally able to make a really good lineart. When I finished, I was like, "Holy cow, it's actually good." My problem was that I rushed through the inking and never took time to focus on the importance of good pen thickness.

Wow thanks, for an advanced art class I picked to do manga all semester and I wanted to try inking really bad so I went out and bought myself a little kit with Prismacolor pens. This helped a lot!

I think that maybe if you had one of those pen sharpies it would work. I'm not all that sure.

This helped me out a lot! Thank you! Also I have some of the pens you got, so you probably can get the pens and paper in Asia. (I live in Hong Kong)

Thanks for this ^_^ I pretty much have only a 0.1 pen. 3, in fact, so breaking one is no problem for me, lol. With regard to my style, I usually just leave the details on the cloth, or texture like thingies to when I shade it. Gives it a more blended look

Never mind. Love your method. And I wouldn't say the lines are too thick- they're perfect.

This is absolutely wonderful!! Inking is my favorite step but I've never been good at figuring out where to thicken the lines. Thank you so much!

Ohmygosh thank you so much for posting this. My hand isn't really steady, so I'm not doing so well with digital inking. on the other hand I'm still having problems with traditional linearts too. -.-' Maybe it's just my pen, maybe it's the paper, but they don't go together well. My line never looks as fine as yours, but it's probably the pen's fault, since my paper is 90 g/m2 (m - squared, or whatever), but when I outline the sketch lines always come out kinda... fuzzy or something, I dunno how to describe it. Anyway they don't have those nice smooth edges your lineart does. Not to mention that I don't know how long I must wait to erasethe pencil lines, and then I have black marks all over my pic... and it's making me frustrated, really. I tried your tip on thickening the lines... and then boom. I was like "Is this seriously my lineart?" I mean it looked pretty good, but ofcourse I failed with rubbering the pencil aaaand... well again with those black marks my rubber left behind. Anyway, I'm gonna go buy pilot inking pens, seems like they do you much better job than my Mitama liquid. Heck does that even count as an inking pen? (not to mention that it doesn't even have its pic on the internet, so it can't be something serious to use for something like manga drawings...)

this helped... A LOT
i still suck at inking, but not nearly as bad as i used to.
i think it may have something to do with cheap pens....
oh well, anyways...
GREAT TUTORIAL!

Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial!
I'm really glad that you made this because now I could do my lneart without feeling like I've messed up a bunch of times, hehe.
Once I got my art outlined and colored, I might show it to you, if you want (;
Just a quick question: Once you've outline it, is it necessary to re-outline them on -insert whatever program-? And if not, then just color them on top?
