Description
First thing I'd like to explain: this tutorial absolutely doesn't include anatomy or digital coloring lessons. I think there are many good tutorials about it here on dA.It' just the colllection of my basic tips which are helpful when we want to save some time. These are things I have learnt myself during the recent years and I'd like to share them with you. I hope it will help you to collect ideas, arrange composition of your drawings, and to avoid typical anatomy mistakes. Moreover, I presented some solutions for correcting mistakes or getting the balance of colors in a very quick way.
I'm aware they are very general tips but I think they can be helpful for the beginners.
Hope you will like this tutorial :]

Is it better to pencil before digital? I'm fairly new as far as both pencil and digital, but should I pencil the art first? or just jump into the digital program and make it?

I can't see mistakes by mirroring pictures. I see them by switching my drawing hand.

I flip my drawing upside down to see my mistakes.
It's really interesting they way we can see our mistakes by just simply looking in a different way.

would go well together, for example picking the color of the shadows
to put over the base color.
Again excellent advice!

Hey! I found your tutorial very helpful, and I decided to use it in a website i am creating (it's in progress XP) -->[link] and I would like to know if you think i should change or add anything in the description, or if you would prefer that i didn't have your tutorial on my website at all. I am very open to suggestions.

I don't mind it so you can keep my tutorial on your website. I'm glad to hear you found it useful . There's a little mispelling in my nickname (Utada) and I would be grateful if it's fixed. But that's not a big deal for me so no worries.

Anatomy mistakes correction?
Why don't you do it the right way and tell people that a solid foundation in realism will help them to better understand human anatomy, and will make it easier for them to distort it into any style?
The computer can't do everything for you if you just suck.

Red-Priest-Usada In reply to char-allen [2011-05-15 14:03:04 +0000 UTC]
That's why I wrote that drawing from reference is not a bad thing because you learn better about human anatomy.
I agree that people should study anatomy books and that's what I do myself, too. However, this tutorial is about fixing some minor mistakes for those who make them from time to time.

But you titled it "Basic Drawing Tips." As in, this is a simple tutorial, for people who are just beginning and don't really know what they're doing quite yet.

Red-Priest-Usada In reply to char-allen [2011-05-15 14:16:52 +0000 UTC]
I totally agree with you that people should learn basic anatomy before they create their own style. It's true that beginners should be told that basic knowledge cannot be replaced with computer tricks. In fact, if they don't know human anatomy, they cannot spot any mistakes and correct them ( I know it from my own experience :]).
It would be better to make a new tutorial about the problem you mentioned. Also, sometimes I see that people excuse their mistakes with their "style".
I'm not sure if I explained it clearly. I agree with you but I wouldn't put that suggestion in this tutorial. I'd rather make the other one covering important tips for beginners :].
Thank you for your suggestion.

this is really nice guide!!~
do you know how to fix a sketch if you find it awkward after looking at the mirror?
i had a trouble doing it. when i'm face it on our mirror it looks awkward, and then when i'm trying to fix it i don't know what to fix since it seems like it's fine since i'm facing it the way i draw it. OTL i don't know how to fix all my drawing in a symmetrical way

Red-Priest-Usada In reply to etherealLove [2011-03-17 08:53:25 +0000 UTC]
When you look at your drawing in the mirror, try to find what you think it's awkward there. The most frequent mistakes are: the size of the head (too big or too small), differences between eyes (one bigger than the other),too long or short arms and legs etc.
Try to memorize the incorrect areas in your drawing while you're still looking at them in the mirror and then fix them when you have a normal view.
