After last class, Que was quite nervous about this this week's lesson. What with folk getting hurt, and some dubbed with the dunce cap. It was a little hard not to be nervous about this class's activities.
But when it was announced that they'd simply be moving water through a paper obstacle course, they were so very relieved. They expected that it'd be much safer and maybe even less eventful. At least, that's what they hoped for.
After everyone had a table with a paper obstacle course set up, they got to work. Starting to slowly cast the magic. Some folk were shaky with their control, some losing their grips and dropping their water. Others use too much force, causing splashes and sprays midway through. One folk they recognized from the previous class, Siren, had seemed to particularly fail. With Angus already lecturing them. Most were working with small amounts of water, just one cup worth. A few were doing very well, with several cups worth. These folk were also adept at moving the water through the course.
Two folk in particular were quiet adept. Taking a moment to become familiar with the spell. Then, take off and finish quickly and easily. Bell, the large and sparkling folk, was easily clearing the course. Even shaping the water into different forms and adeptly move them through the course. While Lun, the dark centuar, was impressively forming and moving a dragon figure made of water through the corse.
Que was greatly impressed by their efforts and accomplishments. They wanted to challenge thwmself, and do something along the same lines. So they got to work, with quiet determination. First, resting their paws onto the sides of a glass of water. Then, slowly trickling their magic into the water. Not simply wrapping around, but also into the water. Then, they moveing it up and out, with their paws slowly drifting upwards as well.
They adjusted to the feeling of the spell, pushing and pulling the water along with their deep, inky blue colored magic. Forming spheres of water, then slowly more geometric shapes. Cubes, pyramids, cones, and a few multisided shapes are reminiscent of dice. After having more confidence with the spell, they joined up all the water and moved it slowly through the course. Adeptly maneuvering the water through, not letting a single drop touch any paper. Seeing this, Suijin gave them all clear for this lesson.
But Que wanted to do it again, to know the spell better, to become more proficient at the finer intricacies and nuances. So they did it again, but in a different form. Before, the water moved through in an amorphous blob. Now, they moved it through in a singular thin stream, like a wire snaking through the course. At first, they moved it slowly through, then wrapped it around to the beginning. As they became better at the motion, they created a loop of the water. From the end, it would move back to the beginning and go through again.
Then, they attempted to move it through in two separate blobs. Which was more difficult, occasionally touching the paper. But soon enough, they could move the two through without them rejoining. Then, they attempted to move them both independently. More mistakes were made, but through them, Que learned more. Becoming more adept at multi-tasking the spell. Which was an interesting sight, because they found that they had to move their paws in a specific way to get it down. A kind of circular motion back and forth and side ways. It didn't really make sense, but it helped them focus more. They didn't notice that their antennae were bobbing up and down, seemingly also helping with the focusing.
Perhapse, unfortunately, Angus caught sight of this and headed over. "What are ya doing?!" "Wha, oh, sorry sir! I'm was just practicing. " Que's first instinct was to apologize after putting the water back into a cup. "I don't see ya practicn! I see ya fuckin about! Wastn yer energy and magic!" The old Badger said harshly after smaking the back of their head, not hard enough to hurt but enough to shock them. "ah... I didn't really think about that. You're right, I'm sorry." Que's ears drooped dejectiedly, while eyeing the other two folk who were doing similar feats. Following their gaze, Angus growled with frustration. "Damn kids! The lot are focus'n on the looks! Having no thoughts bout the waste! Grrr! I'll show em what for!" With that, he huffed over to the two.
Que dejectedly looked at the cup of water and sighed. They liked Angus, and looked up to him. Sure he was grumpy, cantankerous, ancient, loud, obscene, and overall angry. But he was dedicated, and skilled. He was the best magic caster of the whole Grove! He was truly amazing at magic. Even at teaching! As he could teach any folk any magic, unbound by their native magic trees. So rather than angry or frustrated at Angus, they felt so about themself. That they had been sculded by him for a foolish ambition.
They were snaped out of their thoughts when Suijin walked over, perhaps to consoul them. "Hey there, don't feel down. He's like that to everyone." The druid said sympathetically, trying to make them feel better. But to their suprise, Que responded with a sigh and said, "It's not that, I know his tone is always like that. It's that he's right, I was doing too much too soon. Look," they held up paws that had a slight tremor from the exertion. "He's just trying to make sure we don't hurt ourselves." Suijin was utterly shocked at a folk that existed that could say good things about Angus with an appreciative and a thoughtful look. While seeing him yell at their fellow classmates in the room. They were thrown for a loop. "I uh well uhhhh..." Suijin took a deep breath and puased to collect themself for a second. "Yes, well. That's true?" They had a questioning look, "but it's also truly amazing that you can multitask a spell you just learned! You have great potential!" Que looked up at them, thankfully, "hehe, well, I have always felt drawn to water."
After a little more chatting, Suijin advised them to take a break and build up more magic. Afterwards they could practice a little more, with less water so they weren't as drained. After the druid headed off to another table, Que looked refreshed and ready to start practicing again. But they took a moment to rest, and looked forward to next week's class.
