But I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to Nintendo's console history.Β I recognize the Game Boy and DS devices, but what is the first device in the upper-left-hand corner?

It's called Game&Watch, later Nintendo would use a similar design for the DS.Β

Oh, soΒ I guess that's where "Mr. Game and Watch" came from... (as I recall playingΒ SSB Brawl a few years ago)
