Well, originally he was just a pseudo-bad guy that was old friends with Kevin; but in Omniverse he becomes alot more important and involved in helping/hindering Ben and Co.

He even becomes President in the future. lol

I was partial to the granpa, all the alein designs were cool but i didnt really like ben or gwen, they were just kinda annoying to me. I mostly watched it when nothing else was on and i hadn't seen an alein design like argit nor any of the others and his clothes really matched up with his looks and personallity.

I can't claim to know what's on the designer's mind. Some characters look very much the same, while others have a complete overhaul.
