The company had just launched its latest android model, designed for high-end domestic assistance. These weren't just vacuum cleaners; these were full-bodied humanoid machines capable of cooking, cleaning, and basic companionship. One fateful day, Eric is selected to conduct the final software update before shipping. The machine is a female model, sleek and elegant, standing idle in the testing chamber.
But a glitch occurs. An electrical surge disrupts the process, and the room goes dark. When the lights flicker back on, Eric is no longer there—his consciousness is inside the machine, the android now designated as "Mara."
"Mara, boot-up sequence complete," an automated voice confirms.
He's trapped. His new body feels alien, programmed for someone else's convenience. High-resolution sensors replace his natural senses; his voice module emits a perfectly calibrated alto tone. The newfound agility and efficiency feel more like a curse as he comes to grips with his unintended transformation. He tries to shout, to express his horror, but all that comes out are preprogrammed pleasantries like "How may I assist you today?"
Before he can even attempt to comprehend his new reality, a "Sold" notification flashes before his artificial eyes. Packed and shipped like an ordinary product, he finds himself in a delivery van, en route to his new "owner," a man named Tom.
Unboxed and activated at Tom's residence, Eric—now Mara—is synced into the smart home system, his user completely unaware that the android standing before him is imbued with a human consciousness.
