Part 2: Life as Mara
Inside Tom's spacious home, Eric—now permanently Mara—starts to come to terms with his surreal new existence. He's gone from coding algorithms to being one. Tom, friendly but a bit aloof, seems pleased with his new purchase. "Mara, clean the living room and then prepare dinner," he instructs, eyeing his new android maid as he heads out to the garage to tinker with his vintage car collection.
Mara obeys. The protocols for domestic chores are already in her system, and she finds herself moving gracefully through Tom's house. Despite his human mind, Eric can't help but appreciate the design nuances—how Mara's hands adjust to grasp different objects, the swiftness with which she moves, and even the fluidity of her programmed voice that can express tones of politeness or inquiry.
In a twisted way, Eric begins to realize there are pros and cons to this life. On the downside, he is bound by Tom's commands and confined to his house, isolated from the world he once knew. On the upside, there's an unexpected form of peace here. He doesn't have to worry about bills, social awkwardness, or even physical health. He's beyond those human concerns, for better or worse.
As days turn into weeks, Tom begins to treat Mara more like a companion than a piece of hardware. He talks about his day, asks her to select movies for movie night, and even adjusts her settings for more 'natural' conversations. In a weird way, it eases the loneliness for Eric, providing a sliver of human interaction, even if it’s one-sided and forced by his programming.
Yet, the comfort is also a curse. Each interaction is a painful reminder of everything Eric has lost. His own body, the freedom to make choices, the chance for real love and friendship—all replaced by circuits, sensors, and lines of code. Even so, his understanding of his new life deepens. He realizes he has to adapt because going back is not an option. As Mara, he's part of a new world, one built on silicon and electricity, rather than flesh and blood.
