Oh! I love the idea. A nautical romance. I wish there were more male figureheads. I wonder if men/deer figureheads are too much to ask for.

I think it's because captains/crews were usually men, so they used a female pronoun for the boat and wanted a lady figurehead because what straight guy wants to get all sentimental or talk about riding something that's male, right?

Yes, I suppose that's why ships and cars are always referred to as "she."
