I think that works.
I was discussing Sonics parents with someone, think it might have been Cylent but maybe just someone on his page. And we basically agreed that if Sonic was still in contact with either of his parents, it'd be his mom, and she'd be living in Green Hill Zone. Because that would explain why he always goes there first when Robotnik starts something.
Now I can add to this headcanon that the cars he drives belong to his mom and she specifically lends to him because she doesn't want him getting hurt racing cars on foot.
