The F-35 is a good aircraft in its own rights, but replacing the A-10 with it just doesn't sound right. Replacing a battle-proven dedicated CAS designed to survive CAS runs with a jack-of-all-trades look like a step backwards.

I mostly agree. I can't see the F-35 having the gun power, loiter time or survivability of the A-10. It's cost won't help either, who's going to risk the bill when one gets hit by ground fire!

All that said, I think the improvements in communications will make it easier for the JSF to perform the close support role. Better sensors and comms to a FAC will make picking the right targets easier.

Being able to hover vs Being able to take 5 Rpgs without a scratch

The JSF in this picture definitely cant hover, it's an A model. XD

Even if it's a B, the hover is for landing and takeoff only.

Yeah, it'll always be a great CAS platform, be interesting to see how the F-35 fares in the role.
