Description A cheetah color mutation guide I did for my new unfinished roleplay site. The site's currently on a long hiatus and I might never actually launch it, but I thought this would be really neat to share with you guys.

All of these pelt variations have occurred at some point or another and are based on information from this site: www.messybeast.com/genetics/mu… (in case the site is down for any reason here's an archived version of the page: web.archive.org/web/2013082208… ) I did use a little bit of creative liberty with the exact colors and marking positions, since there are no photographs of mutant specimens except for king cheetahs (UPDATE: a ticked (spotless) cheetah has been photographed in Kenya! www.dailymail.co.uk/news/artic… ).

Fun fact: Cheetahs have abnormally little variation in their genetic code, due to a severe population bottleneck that happened during the last ice age. And yet it's incredible to find such a wide range of possible mutations (though many may have been lost forever by now).

Feel free to base your character on these descriptions, but please don't post this guide anywhere else without asking for my permission first and linking back here.

Cheetah template made by me.

Edit: Wow, a hundred favorites in just eight hours? I didn't know there were so many cheetah lovers out there!
Edit2: 300 favorites by 27 Aug 2011, and more are added every week. Thank you, really, it means a lot to me.
Edit3: Reached 1000 favorites on 30 May 2015

This is very beautiful Work, and I'd love to see more Mutations of the Cheetah other than the spotless (which is a beauty) and the King Cheetah on Real Life Photos <3
But if some People continue we won't even be able to see the normal Cheetah in wild life.
It is just sad what we are doing to the Nature and the Animals, I mean technically we are Animals too and it's just sad seeing so many Animals die and the destroyed Nature..

Cheetahs - the best of the low-rank. And more docile to people due to their sociable personalities.

Oh wow, this guide really helped me see not all cheetahs are gold with black spots and showed me that yes, there actually can be variety in these lovely cats! Seeing the 'red' cheetah has actually helped me in designing a character.
(however, when you do update this, I've noticed that king cheetahs tend to have a small 'mane' running down from their necks to right behind their shoulder blades vov sorry if this sounds nitpicky or anything, I don't mean to sound like that)

Thank you! I am very glad you've found this guide helpful.

And don't worry, you're not nit-picky. I was a bit lazy and based all of the mutations on the same lineart (hence also why the woolly one looks just like the rest, though reportedly its fur had been thicker and spots more blurred). I posted this guide a little over four years ago, but since I still keep getting notifications for it, if I finally feel like messing with my tablet again, I'll see if I can give the king cheetah a dark mane (and update the ticked one to be closer to the recent wild sighting). Thanks for the feedback.

Heyyy! I realize this is a super old upload, but it may be worth noting that the albino cheetah probably would not possess pink/red eyes!
Certain animal types display red/pink eyes in albinism, while others (such as felines and primates) have icy blue eyes with pink accents (typically seen in the sclera and pupil)-- much akin to how some albino animals are white, while others are yellow! (:

So, for a cheetah... Although I haven't heard or seen any documentation of them (surely due to the incredibly minimal genetic diversity that currently exists in these animals), it could certainly be inferred that they would have the same icy eyes as every other feline species!

Oh wow, I didn't know that! Thank you!

I've had an lowkey interest in updating this guide for a while, changing a couple of details that are inaccurate, I'll definitely be keeping this in mind if and when I eventually do.

These are some rather pretty cats. It's a shame so many variations may as well have been lost by now, but it's great that we still had them when they may have existed... And who knows, maybe a small amount of cheetahs may still have these recessive genes in them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ahillamon In reply to TDK-Nevercanth [2014-05-18 18:12:10 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it seems that some of the recessive genes have survived, hence the quite recently photographed spotless cheetah. I'm hoping more pop up eventually.

TDK-Nevercanth In reply to ahillamon [2014-05-19 01:13:04 +0000 UTC]

I honestly am dying to know if the long-furred recessive gene can 'overlap' or coexist for lack of a better term with the other spot and color related genes, like how we can long-haired tabbies... Hopefully there will be a time to find out in the near future.~

ahillamon In reply to WolfGrowl96 [2014-03-28 10:03:59 +0000 UTC]

You mean like advice on designing your own characters? I wish I could give you some concrete advice, but creating characters is a very individual process, so what works for some people might not work for you. It all depends on what you're looking for; whether you like more realistic designs or ones that look unique and colorful, etc.
One thing I would suggest is to try brainstorming what you'd like from a design (maybe even make a list of traits, though that's optional) and the start sketching out little ideas. That way you can see what works and what doesn't without wasting too much time and effort on a single picture. Then once you have a clearer idea of what you want (for example the body shape from design 3 and the colors and markings from design 2 etc), you can make a more detailed image from that. Hope that helped!

No i know how to, i mean is there any rules about the cheetahs fur pattern? You know to avoid people critizing it and saying "thatd not how cheetahs look"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ahillamon In reply to WolfGrowl96 [2014-03-29 13:33:42 +0000 UTC]

Ah, alright, you should have been more specific then. Cheetahs have small, elliptical spots densely clustered on their fur (compare to leopards and jaguars, who have rosettes instead). The spots merge into stripes near the end of the tail. One of the cheetah's most distinctive features is a black "tear-stripe" running from their eyes to the corners of their mouth. Remember to add that and your character will immediately look more cheetah-like. Also pay attention to their body shape: long, thin limbs and torso with a long tail and narrow, small-ish head.

i like the lsabelline cheetah but i wuld like to make the spot a bit borwn and the normal pelt kinda like a sunset

is that ok?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ahillamon In reply to crystalwolfahlpa50 [2013-12-27 20:35:06 +0000 UTC]

Did you mean that as in making your own character like that, or changing this guide? Because I based my colors on a description of a real occurrence of an isabelline cheetah: "[...] Cream (or isabelline) cheetahs appear to be a further dilution of red with pale red spots on a pale background." So I don't think brown spots and a "sunset" background would be accurate. You are free to create your own character like that though.
