Description I don't understand why people tend to hate hyenas so much.
They are very social animals and one of the few mammalian species where the females are considerably larger than the males. And yes, while hyenas steal other carnivores' kills when possible, they are also excellent hunters, able to take down large herbivores with considerable ease. Some clans get up to 90 percent of their meals through hunting.

This painting is devoted to the African Savannah's most adaptive predator.

Time: 8 hours

ahillamon In reply to Phoenix-Cry [2012-06-09 11:34:54 +0000 UTC]

Apparently so. Not so much among the animal and nature lovers, but people in general who tend think along the lines of 'if it's not cute then I don't like it'. But that's what this deviation is for, to hopefully change their minds one person at a time.

Thank you for the comment!

I think that's a really neat aspect of hyena society as well.

You heard correct, lions steal hyenas' kills more often than vice versa.

Haha I wonder how so much people fucking love wolves and they think the wolves are sooo underated and hated....

....And look what bullshit they can write about the hyenas ? WTF ? Seriously ! The whole werewoof lycan theriantropes should be shut up and get a brain back.

ahillamon In reply to mike-marten [2012-02-13 16:41:45 +0000 UTC]

I agree, though I guess it's partly down to the fact that hyenas don't look as "conventionally cute" as wolves do, at least not by the majority's definition of 'cute'. And also many people have read "White Fang", "The Call of the Wild", and watched Balto, which depict wolves as these powerful, majestic and intelligent creatures, while hyenas get to play the role of villains/comic-relief in The Lion King and that's about it. Even nature documentaries are often shot from the perspective of more photogenic predators like lions or cheetahs, and every time hyenas show up they are viewed as the bad guys, stealing the poor helpless felines' kills.

So yeah, hyenas get a lot of bad rep in the more mainstream media, though luckily I've seen a few really good hyena-centric documentaries as well. All we can do really is try to show them in a better light and hope a few people take notice. Thanks for the comment!

Hehe, but guess what is the paradox ? When I was child and saw TLK movie, it made me like the hyenas and I tried to find some facts about them, and not hate. And that was pretty hard without internet. I was 7 or so ....

Me too actually, Shenzi was and still is one of my favorite cartoon characters. Too bad we seem to be the exception, because otherwise I think there'd be a lot more hyena art around.

itΒ΄s not a predator is a scavenger.

ahillamon In reply to Bling-Werewolf-Girl [2012-01-31 12:16:15 +0000 UTC]

Actually, hyenas hunt their own prey about 90% of the time, they only scavenge when another carnivore has made a kill and there are enough hyenas present to be able to steal it. So therefore I would still call them predators, not scavengers.

Excellent stuff! I also think hyenas are interesting animals. I heard that their intelligence social-wise is on par with primates.

Indeed, hyenas have intricate group hierarchies, with even the highest ranking males being lower in the 'pecking order' than the lowliest female. And even at a young age, female pups bully the males because they know they can get away with it.
