Description A cheetah color mutation guide I did for my new unfinished roleplay site. The site's currently on a long hiatus and I might never actually launch it, but I thought this would be really neat to share with you guys.

All of these pelt variations have occurred at some point or another and are based on information from this site: www.messybeast.com/genetics/mu… (in case the site is down for any reason here's an archived version of the page: web.archive.org/web/2013082208… ) I did use a little bit of creative liberty with the exact colors and marking positions, since there are no photographs of mutant specimens except for king cheetahs (UPDATE: a ticked (spotless) cheetah has been photographed in Kenya! www.dailymail.co.uk/news/artic… ).

Fun fact: Cheetahs have abnormally little variation in their genetic code, due to a severe population bottleneck that happened during the last ice age. And yet it's incredible to find such a wide range of possible mutations (though many may have been lost forever by now).

Feel free to base your character on these descriptions, but please don't post this guide anywhere else without asking for my permission first and linking back here.

Cheetah template made by me.

Edit: Wow, a hundred favorites in just eight hours? I didn't know there were so many cheetah lovers out there!
Edit2: 300 favorites by 27 Aug 2011, and more are added every week. Thank you, really, it means a lot to me.
Edit3: Reached 1000 favorites on 30 May 2015

seems messybeast is down right now but there is such a thing as King Leopard, which the King Cheetah's markings can look like.

Also found a lion with a bit of black: karlshuker.blogspot.com/2013/0…

Huh, I had no idea Messybeast was down. I really hope it isn't down for good (it was still up in August), but nevertheless if anyone needs to access the information while it's down here's an archived version of the cheetah mutations page: web.archive.org/web/2013082208…
Never heard of a King Leopard before, though pseudo-melanistic (abundist) leopards shouldn't be unheard of.

Yep, I know about that one. Even had the page bookmarked. There are also reddish-brown stuffed leopards, though it's hard to say conclusively if they really are erythristic leopards or just melanistic leopards with the black pigment breaking down because of age and incorrect storing conditions.

It was still up like a few days ago for me. At least I saved the pic, just for referencing in drawings etc. Did the same with a certain Ocelot/Puma hybrid face since I had a feeling it would poof after. It did poof.

You mean the photos of mutant cheetahs? That's kinda sad to hear, I guess you could try explaining to her that different color mutations do exist and maybe show her photographs of normal and white tigers to prove a point (because there are so many white tiger photos you couldn't photoshop them all). Then maybe move on to king cheetahs and the spotless cheetah. I mean yeah there have been some photoshopped images of animals on the internet, but I doubt reputable nature magazines and sites would fall for them that often.

Cool! I'm glad someone else is fascinated with these color morphs as well. Great write-up too and it's neat how you found pictures of other big cats with the mutations when cheetah images weren't available. I've been meaning to do additional color morph guides for other species, but unfortunately I've never really had the time to tackle that.

What i want to know is whether or not king cheetahs, if bred togother, will make king cheetah offspring

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

ahillamon In reply to Wonamb [2013-08-28 22:39:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, since the king cheetah pattern is caused by a recessive mutated gene, then if both parents are king cheetahs there should be a higher chance of their offspring exhibiting the blotched pattern as well. I'm not sure if all of the cubs would be affected (it's late at night and I'm too tired right now to dig for relevant scientific articles), but since I know that two white tigers don't always have white offspring I'd hazard a guess that there isn't a 100% chance of king cheetah offspring. Though in the case with the white tigers the "whiteness" is caused by different mutations and aargh I can't remember my genetics lessons right now and I really should just go to bed now, sorry for the crappy answer.

Heh, this made me smile! I always knew about the "king cheetah", there's even been a couple of docus about them or so, but the others were all new to me (except I could probably have assumed melanistic cheetas could occur, as well as albinos)

Are all these purely random mutations, that can occur in any litter?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ahillamon In reply to ZEGH8578 [2013-07-27 21:08:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I do not know how often these mutations can occur, some of them haven't been documented for decades, even centuries, so the genotypes causing them might be extinct. On the other hand, a ticked cheetah was photographed in the wild only a year ago, so who knows when and where mutant color variations might show up again.

ZEGH8578 In reply to ahillamon [2013-07-27 21:25:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanx for the clarification! This random stuff is what evolution is made of, so these anomalies are essential to life on earth, if you think about seeing a little, lone anomaly like that, is like getting a glimpse into what could be, or what might be, just... the possibilities!

I don't know, I don't really buy there being a Mngwa animal, but who knows. Maybe it really was a mutant coat pattern.

I already knew about the cubs' coats, but thank for the links anyway, very cute pics.

looks like it, Asiatics my most fav... unfortunately it may be joining the extinct species much sooner than its african counterpart...

so many animals/nature/wildlife... and certain parts of lyrics from three different songs help motivate me to write my animal book story which essentially takes place in a "possible" future...

"Some body please explain
Cause all we want is to be treated the same
Just live in peace with peace of mind
Enjoy the earth, this life and my kind (my kind)
Right now it's time to celabrate
Relax, Kick back put your feet up forget to hate.

Is it me or has this world gone crazy
Last chance, Last dance force maybe
Bombs are droppin body's poppin like the last days
Now I finally understand how crime pays
Its the plan that's designed through corruption
Total domination, mass destruction
Or mass distraction you do the math
When 1+1 don't equal 3 no
It's like a sickness that they don't want the cure for
Apocalyptic and only been sured for
It's like we're doomed and were headed for our last days
I wanna peace of mind, everlastin"

"Some say eat or be eaten
Some say live and let live
But all are agreed as they join the stampede
You should never take more than you give

In the circle of life
It's the wheel of fortune
It's the leap of faith
It's the band of hope
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle, the circle of life

Some of us fall by the wayside
And some of us soar to the stars
And some of us sail through our troubles
And some have to live with the scars"

"Dare - dare to believe you can survive
You hold the future in your hand
Dare - dare to keep all of your dreams alive
It's time to take a stand
And you can win, if you dare"
