Description
A cheetah color mutation guide I did for my new unfinished roleplay site. The site's currently on a long hiatus and I might never actually launch it, but I thought this would be really neat to share with you guys. All of these pelt variations have occurred at some point or another and are based on information from this site: www.messybeast.com/genetics/mu… (in case the site is down for any reason here's an archived version of the page: web.archive.org/web/2013082208… ) I did use a little bit of creative liberty with the exact colors and marking positions, since there are no photographs of mutant specimens except for king cheetahs (UPDATE: a ticked (spotless) cheetah has been photographed in Kenya! www.dailymail.co.uk/news/artic… ).
Fun fact: Cheetahs have abnormally little variation in their genetic code, due to a severe population bottleneck that happened during the last ice age. And yet it's incredible to find such a wide range of possible mutations (though many may have been lost forever by now).
Feel free to base your character on these descriptions, but please don't post this guide anywhere else without asking for my permission first and linking back here.
Cheetah template made by me.
Edit: Wow, a hundred favorites in just eight hours? I didn't know there were so many cheetah lovers out there!
Edit2: 300 favorites by 27 Aug 2011, and more are added every week. Thank you, really, it means a lot to me.
Edit3: Reached 1000 favorites on 30 May 2015

Hehe, well obviously not the first since I based these on historic descriptions. But I do believe I'm the first one who drew them all in one picture. Thanks!

Thank you! I'm happy to hear that, especially since I only had a few descriptions to base most of them on. Sometimes I wish cameras were invented centuries ago.

If only the mutation still existed. The only blue cheetah I know of belonged to a Moghul Emperoro of India in 1608.

I thought a white cheetah would be leucistic rather than albino? I dunno.

You are (partially) correct; it could be both (because I think both leucistic and albinistic mutations might exist for cheetahs). I just wrote albino because more people are familiar with albinism, the reference material I used didn't mention a leucistic cheetah, and because the two mutations have (at least superficially) similar results: the lessening and/or lack of pigmentation.
I'm glad for your comment though.

If we can get white lions, white tigers, white leopards ([link] ), we can have white cheetahs.

Yup. ^^ Incidentally, there are both leucistic white tigers (the ones with dark stripes) and completely white ones (with or without ghost-striping).

Wow. ._. You should do this for the other big cats too. It's suuuper helpful for realistic rps.

Thank you! I do have ideas for a tiger version of the guide, but right now I really don't have the time to draw it. It's on the backburner though.

I just rechecked my collected data on tiger mutations, looks like I'll be doing eight different tiger colors (nine if I'm splitting hairs and differentiating between golden tabby tigers and tigers with orange backgrounds and brown stripes). It won't be easy drawing and coloring all that.

do all these species exist???
i know that there is something called king cheetah, nut never heard about the others O_o
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ahillamon In reply to Syrus-Jay-Oker [2011-11-03 21:11:41 +0000 UTC]
Well, they're actually not species (or even sub-species) of cheetahs, they are just different color and pattern mutations that have occurred at one point or another. The only reason why most of these don't exist right now is because mutations like this are very rare and may have become extinct (either due to hunters or natural selection).

Unfortunately the site is currently on an indefinite hiatus and might never actually be opened. I don't want it to start up until I know I'm able to commit 100% to it, but sadly my university schedule is quite hectic and I just don't have the time available. :/

Oii! This isn't genetic mutation! This is natural! Human's had nothing to do with this!

ahillamon In reply to Mattbroyoupro [2011-08-30 18:42:14 +0000 UTC]
Genetic mutations like these have occured spontaneously in nature all the time, even before humans had evolved. In fact, without natural genetic mutation, all life would still be incredibly simple bacteria-like organisms, if life existed at all.
