Description
What you see here is the result of efforts spanned over more than 14 months. We can win the race! - Stand up for the champions!
This is my 1963 Mini 850 mk1, seen here at Governor House on 14th August 2007 (Pakistan's Independence Day)
Mini liked Governor House very much but I decided to take her back.
The story of my Mini is as long and interesting as of any good classic car undergone a complete and expensive restoration, the really good thing is that it is completely documented with high resolution pictures, local/foreign expense bills, and various journals/diary. Please do tell me if you are interested to get more on this.
Its important to note that I pulled out the original 848cc engine and installed a 1098cc from MG 1100 Sports Saloon having 12G726 camshaft and 12G202 cylinder head. (I have the original 848cc packed in a wooden box)
I saved myself from many future worries by taking the engine with the transmission (remote shift type) as complete.
I was also surfing the internet (finding people with exactly the same set of problems as I did) I was also keen to mess up with the books and manuals with my fully lubricated hands. I also took interest in wasting away my redundant shirts while I was building my car.
However, at that time, by mistake I counted the MG 1100's pinion for 17 tooth whilst it was actually 15 tooth, this mistake gave me a false Final Drive of 3.647 (62/17) instead of the correct 4.133 (62/15).
You will not believe but a cat was actually responsible for breaking away my concentration, she was of white colour with brown spots, if you are interested to catch her.
The car became very quick upto 60 mph, given Mini's 10" tyres instead of MG 1100's 12", anything above 55 mph was a pain for both engine and driver, I hardly ever went beyond that.
Ever since the restoration, I haven't driven more than 600 miles because of this problem alone. I like acceleration, but acceleration is one thing and thrashing is another.
I am going to solve this in a few days as I have an 18 tooth pinion for 3.444 (62/18)
A big shipment from Minispares has just arrived with everything new for the clutch, a new road/rally lightened steel flywheel, new pressure plate, new clutch disc, blue coded diaphragm, thrust bearing and a clutch arm, clutch return spring and its small bracket.
This shipment also contains many parts that were fitted to the engine and the engine bay of a new car, these include vacuum pipes, heater hoses, oil pressure pipes, water pump, oil pump, oil pressure guage T piece for both warning light and pressure guage etc.
I already had a new clutch master cylinder, new slave cylinder, clutch flexible hose and clutch throwout plunger.
Since I had to replace all this stuff, I thought it was a good time to change the FD as well.
Yes, you are right, the engine is living outside of my the mini's engine room presently, he is on holidays actually.

That's a great looking car. I hope you have more fun with it with all the new parts installed.

This car was a learning, its hard to tell what it feels like rebuilding your dream car after it has taken more than 40 years of punishment.
Whilst almost every third part installed was new, others were not, they were just cleaned, repaired and refinished.
