I'm assuming you're talking about the more traditional/conventional anime styles though?
You have to remember that anime styles are very diverse. It's actually still possible to label this as a unique form of an anime style. Not that I'm saying it should be, but I for one know of really great anime artists and they too have more semi-realistic styles despite the work being labelled under the anime/manga banner. For example, you have Oh!Great, the artist of the manga series Air Gear. While Oh!Great's old style was definitely closer to traditional anime, his current style is a beautiful combination of manga/anime and semi-realism.
